A question within myself. What is the difference between Quilting and Sashiko? Toward #QuiltCon2020, I am spending as much time as possible learning the Quilting. ☆ Quilting and Sashiko have a lot of similarities. “How to enjoy fabric” is a universal language in between Quilting & Sashiko. One (possible) significant difference will be that quilters have a specific design as their blueprint. They have a destination when they start the project - very beautiful design and theme. They cut fabric nicely and beautifully, then stitch together. (Forgive me if my understanding of quilting is incorrect.) ☆ Sashiko also requires a process of cutting fabric, of course. However, including myself, many Sashiko artisans prefer, “Not-cutting-the-fabric” process. If there is a choice, I prefer using the fabric as is. Some of the Boro we make, we try to use the fabric as is - with less cutting the fabric. It is difficult to explain logically, it is more like a feeling. Again, it is not about good or bad. The quilting I find is so beautiful, and I will enjoy the Quiltcon. In my Sashiko workshop, I tell a LOT of stories. However, I differentiate the workshop from the lecture. I share the very minimum information they have to know in the first 20 min, then jump into the practice. While they stitch, I share many stories as if I am layering the fabrics. They stitch and learn simultaneously.  ☆ The QuiltCon is an awesome event. Although I was a bit OFF yesterday because of a long trip, I enjoyed many quilting with layers of stories. I love reading the artists’ description, and I love enjoying the stories the fabric themselves talk to. I am sure the fabric lovers can feel the same way. It is such an opportunity to see the great fabric work in a few days. As I keep saying, the words are often insufficient in describing a whole. “Boro is not a word for patchwork” is a clear message, but it doesn’t communicate the whole. It is easy to tell my own definition of “what it (Boro) is”, but I do not want you to believe only what I say - I want you to find the culture by seeing & feeling what we make. ☆ I learned a lot in #QuiltCon2020, the first big quilt festival I had attended. Many beautiful Quilting Arts (Piecing work) encouraged me to make one - and I may be able to share what “Boro” is by making a piece with my own interpretation of “(Modern) Quilting”. ☆ It is not better or worse, or superior or inferior. All the hand-crafting culture is equally precious. They just have different roots, culture and motivation. There are(were) always good people behind hand-stitching. THEREFORE, it is very important to respect the origin - instead of just using a word as a trend. I learned a lot in #QuiltCon. Sashiko & Modern Quilt can share a lot in common. At the same time, I found some interesting differences as well. PLEASE do not misunderstand here. I am not talking about which is good or bad. Both are good. ☆ In watching many quilts, in reading the stories, I felt the vivid message from the artist. They put the strong message in quilting. Politics, Equality, Sustainability… Each quilt has a “theme”. This is the reason I call quilting the Art, and Sashiko as non-Art. I do not have those messages when I make a Sashiko piece, neither Keiko. We simply enjoy the communication with the fabric so that the (Unused/old/damaged) fabric can be on the stage again. ☆ This helps me to distinguish what I do clearly. When I make a Sashiko piece with a clear message, then I am an Artist. When I Sashiko to make a Boro-To-Be piece, my main concern is how to enjoy this stitching, not how to save the planet. However, when I decided to stitch to advocate environmental protection, then what I do may be an Art. Doesn’t it make sense? I felt so clear after pondering around in the quiltcon for several hours. I am back to the ordinary. Big thanks to #MQG to have me for the great event #QuiltCon2020. Good energy, good people, and beautiful quilting. Fabric talks. It was filled with stories and messages.  ☆ When I received the offer, I wasn’t sure if I would be a good fit for MQG. I am neither a quilter nor practicing modern. However, I learn it is okay to share the “tradition” to appreciate “modern”. It is not “OR”, it can be “And”, then my job is to advocate the coexisting of “Tradition” and “Modern” in Sashiko. It was awesome. I hope to see you in another QuiltCon! ☆ - - - ☆ 夢のような二日間でした。8時間のワークショップを2日間という、これまでにない究極の疲労を感じた時間でしたが、この3年間の集大成をお見せできたような気がしています。興味→期待→驚き→落胆→失望→「あれっ？」→可能性→期待→リズム→運針→「淳喋りすぎ」というワークショップの流れをゆっくり感じられるのが6~8時間なのだなと。僕も上達しているようで。 ☆ 運針に焦点をあてて刺し子をすると、あまり手先に集中が行きません。つまり、「ながら刺し子」ができるようになります。運針ができるようになった人から順にワイワイと話しながら、最後は僕の話を全く聞かなくなる感じのワークショップ。最高でした。それだけ楽しめていて、刺し子もできているわけなので。 ☆ 「刺し子なんぞに人生かけるのは無理」と思っていた二十代。今は刺し子のおかげで沢山の喜びを頂いています。「（俺の実演をみて）できるわけないじゃん！」と少し怒りの表情を見せた後に、「（自分でできるようになって）案外簡単じゃん？」と思ってもらえるのが、僕の運針をお教えするワークショップの何よりもの喜びです。 ☆ #Sashiko #Upcycle #SashikoWorkshop #SashikoMastery #SashikoClass #SashikoStitching #Unshin #RunningStitch #JapaneseSashiko #TraditionalSashiko #ModernSashiko #刺し子 #運針 #刺し子ワークショップ #キルトコン https://www.instagram.com/p/B89VWGpp6Q3/?igshid=x14igx3c53sz

"I am the past. You are the future”. ☆ In #QuiltCon2020, while workshop, when I talk to some quilters, this phrase came out naturally. I am the past. You are the future. I do NOT mean that I am old-dated or unimportant. The past is the foundation of the future. As I keep saying, I encourage people to call their stitching Sashiko as long as they respect the tradition - the tradition is the “past”.  ☆ I met a lot of “futures” in these 4 days. I am in the box of “Sashiko”. I keep speaking out for Sashiko. Someone gotta do that, right? Don’t be scared. However, please keep learning so I would do the same. One culture can be as deep as generations of someone’s life. Books are sometimes not “whole” enough to understand one culture. I enjoyed #QuiltCon very much, and seeing many rising stars. My first #QuiltCon2020! Although I couldn’t locate the “Happy Hour event” tonight, I saw “Happy Hour” happening everywhere. I gotta take a good rest tonight for tomorrow & Sat. 2 am and 9 hours of traveling isn’t easy. See you tomorrow in Quiltcon as well. ☆ Thank you for the tip of “Grip Scissors” on the plane. I used to use my nose hair cutter, but recently I just brought the thread pre-cut for the amount of traveling. I knew it… I just forgot to take the grip scissor out from the bag… The second photo is a whole bag I put into the check in bag. Thank God that I ran to the check in counter.
