#sashiko

Patching up my field pants with sashiko (kinda). The patch on the left is an old sashiko patch that has held up great, while the right is a patch-fix-in-progress. I had made a patch with fabric from some old pants (like on the left) but I messed around with machine sewing and the machine thread just did not hold up. This time I got some tiny quilting squares with fun patterns (and have actually folded under the edges to help with fraying). I'm doing a kasane-kikkō pattern, but accidentally made them 1 square taller than they should be. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I also had to redo the guide lines a couple times, but that's part of the learning process!

Inspired by the many talks and artworks at #Bridges2026 that are based on and deal with sashiko embroidery, and also by the deeply inspiring and delightful plenary talk by @beesandbombs, here are a first few sashiko gifs made with p5.js.

Since I've started offering people mending services, I figured it'd be good to have some examples to show them. Also, having a little library like this makes the thing-collector in me extremely happy.

These work pants are so patched they’re essentially an art piece at this point, but yay, another project done, hopefully they last another year!

(And a note to the influx of new followers: I've got a few more days' worth of mending posts, but then it's back to the usual art/writing combo!)
