How would one get into playing nekrons on a budget?
nekrons! I love nekros I on impulse bought an epic army (the small scale game) that lives in a drawer and have yet asambled when I heard about all the old man yaoi that those metal skeletons get up to.
While I have a little experience with necrons I'm not an expert or even a regular necron player, so I will do my best to give you what looks like a playable army within budget.
Also you didn't give me a budget! So this will be a long post as I go down from $100 to $0 on how to hopefully get to 1k points of nekrons. If something does not apply to you move on to the next section. Another thing, the less amount spent the more effort and time is to be expected to get this army toguether.
In each section I'll do a version with and a version without proxies. So without further ado
1k necron army for $100 at most!
without proxies:
It can't be done, I've looked and tried and tried, you can't get to 1k points without proxies.
Closest I got to was 960 for $176 so I'll break that down
First I will usually recomend secondary market resources I trust, but occasionally I'll mention deals you might get in your local game store (if u have one) this is not your local warhammer store, I will very rarely recomend u to go to those. This is more your local game, hobby or comic store you like and enjoy supporting.
This is one such case, there is a new nekron kill team "canoptek circle" this will run u around $60 depending on your lgs, it includes a bunch of units:
1 geo mancer
2 canoptek tomb crawlers
5 canoptek macrocythes
1 canoptek reanimator
For a grand total of 280 to 315 points depending what upgrades you give your geo mancer. This is probably the current most affordable way to start your necron army and it will also give you a ready to go army for killteam if you ever want to play that (killteam is fun and how I got into 40k)
The rest of the points to get to 1k you are going to pick up from the secondary market, of the places I check Noble Knight had the best deals rn on used pieces, unlike the killteam which will come unasembled and unpaknted these figures will already be assembled and painted.
From noble knight I'd say pick up
2 units of necron warriors for $20 per unit
The World's Largest Selection of tabletop games!
The World's Largest Selection of tabletop games!
If these sell out there are more similarly priced units there I just picked the 2 cheapest ones, points wise the 2 units at 90 points a piece will get u up 180 points
With those units you'll need 2 more characters to lead them I would recomend picking up an overlord (85 to 120 points) and a tecknomancer (80 to 115 points) from noble knight aswell.
I found a couple of old secondhand models, the overlord for $18 and the teknomancer for $13
The World's Largest Selection of tabletop games!
The World's Largest Selection of tabletop games!
then for the last chunk of points I found a doom scythe for $45 this will get u 230 points and a cool flying croissant vehicle for your army
The World's Largest Selection of tabletop games!
So there you have it if you didn't want to use any proxies that's your army for $176 bucks plus shipping and taxes.
There is one more thing you could buy for $175 in your local game store or online that's the necron combat patrol which includes about 445 worth of points including some necron warriors a big robot vehicle, some elites. Some scarab swarms and also an overlord
I only bring this up because in my search I found some9ne selling it for $65, which is an amazing deal BUT I've never heard of this site before and it's giving me knockoff temu vibes, I only bring it up incase you are like "oh lulu world yeah I use it all the time" otherwise exercise caution.
Anyways
Now let's talk about proxies
If I were to proxy an army of necrons in the budget of at most $100 I would go for 3d printing, if you don't have a printer you trust your milage may vary on Etsy but that's what I will be recommending
Hey remember that killteam I mentioned for $60 well someone is selling a proxy version of it for $30
https://www.etsy.com/listing/4365719396/tomb-world-kill-squad?ref=elp_anchor_listing&pro=1&sts=1
so I would do 2 squads of that that for 560 to 620 points then add one squad of nekron warriors from noble knight as mentioned above, with both the tenomancer and an overlord attached and that gets us to around 945 depending on enhancements for a grand total of .. $111... listen I tried my best, if you can find a 1 to 5 dollar 3dprinted necron overlord or tech priest and maybe a squad of 10 necrons for $10 that price could go down to around $80 and maybe you find a 3d printed doomcythe for $20 to bring you to $100, I have seen them for around these prices I just couldn't find any rn
Ok so that's the $100 challenge mostly failed, how about the $50 and $0 challenges those will fail aswell right? Well for the no proxy version yess for sure.
But at $50 and $0 dollars I'm much more willing to give you the resources and tell you how to make cheap proxies
Tbos is where I introduce 2 invaluable recourses for playing the game on a budget listforge and wahapedia
Listforge is an app you can download that will help you make your lists for games and has all the relevant rules, highly recomend it, you get 6 lists for free then you have to watch an add for any new list it even has campaing rules for each faction
Wahapedia: Warhammer 40,000 10th edition, Necrons — Necron Warriors (unit characteristics, wargear options, wargear profiles, abilities, uni
wahapedia has all the rules and information in a website format but more importantly it has BASE SIZES this will be very important for proxing
So for both $0 and $50 I'll use the same list but the money will depend on what materials and resources you have/will want to get to get your metal skeletons ready for battle
so first and foremost we are gonna get us some skeletons/terminator toys you want 20 generic guys (two squads of necron warriors) and 3 especial guys to be your leaders. If you don't already have some (either old toys or lego skeletons) I would recomend going to your local dollar stores or charity/trift stores to look for them if none of this works/you don't wanna get out of the house, get yourself some paper/cardboard and make them yourself! The scale is around 28 to 32 mm in size but aslong as u are playing with friends it's fine I'd they are little bit taller or bigger aslong as they fit in the bases
Your 20 generic necron warriors will go in 32 mm bases. These bases you can sometimes find for cheap in buncles at game stores or hobby shops, but you can also see if your lgs has a "bits box" where players leave uneeded bases and parts of models, I always recomend checking the bits box you might even find a necron there! In parts!. If not you can MAKE them out of cardboard! You'll need to make a circle of the apropiate length (in this case 32mm)
So now you have gotten, found or made your generic guys maybe painted them silver or black or green or whatever u want, u still need to make your 3leaders, for this list youl get an overlord that goes on a 40mm base, this guy you can dress all fancy in some robes or maybe paint them gold or with glitter to signify they are important and your leader, you can also give him a weapon, a sword, staff or scythe, this will TECKNICALLY change the attacks he gets but at this point just choose the one u think it's coolest
Wahapedia: Warhammer 40,000 10th edition, Necrons — Overlord (unit characteristics, wargear options, wargear profiles, abilities, unit compo
some overlord examples
also that reminds me the poor hammer community on reddit is an amazing resource on paper and cardboard units
your other two leaders are a teknomancer and a chrono mancer
For the teknomamcer give it a little spider pet (we will get back to them later) and a staff, he will be in a 50mm base
For the chronomancer you'll want to give him a little cube to fidget with if u can and a staff, he goes in a 40 mm base.
Ok you have all your leaders and tour foot soldiers next we get SPIDERS or scarab or whatever little critter you want, once again we are hitting up dollar store and other places for small little bugs you want 3 big ones that will each go in a 60mm base those are your canoptek spyders 3 units of them cus they are cool, they want to be around your little spiders which will be your canoptek scarab swarms
The grams will be in 40m bases I'm making u run 3 units of 3 swarms each cus I think they are cool and that way each big spider has a little group of small spider friends. For these I'd separate all thw little spider or bugs u got and painted metal (or made) into 9 bundles each one will go in a base, glue them in there, I haven't said glue yet, youl probably want to use glue alot, superglue works or whatever u have just be mindful that most other flue aren't as stable and take longer to bond.
that's what the swarms and spyders look like
Fibally we have one unit left
A doom scythe
Your frying crossaint, this isngonna go in a 120 by 92 mm "flying base"
The reason I chose this unit for proxy is because the shape is pretty easy to replicategrav some cardboard make a circle with a little rubbing sticking out, cute smaller circle into the circle then either use more cardboard or a stick or a toilet paper roll to attach it to your base and there u go, u CAN also use an actual crossaint but the crubs will go everywhere
and this proxy list brings us to 985 points before giving your characters upgrades, so a full 1k point army!
Like I said if a necron player looks at these lists and goes those are store unplayable well, please let me know what u would recomend.
Personally I might try to proxy this list myself one of these days and report back with how it went. As always I'm open to questions clarifications. I wrote this post in.. 4 hours doing all the research and list building and having tumblr delete 2 previous versions. So if it feels rambly that's why lol, this was very fun to do tho thank you for the ask
