“Mom?” a five-year-old questioned, looking down at his mother who was fixing his shoes, getting him ready for his first day in school as her maids prepared his bag. “Yes, hon” she looked up at him, smiling at her adorable son. “Will daddy come too?” he asked with hope in his eyes. But this question made Nat’s smile dropped.
She recalled all the memories of her and her son’s dad. She hated that man with her whole heart. He had only filled their marriage with nothing but fights.
Before she could even tell Jae about their unborn child, he had already signed the divorce papers, leaving her in a heartbeat. Never once did he ever look back at her after years of them being together.
Even though it was unfair of her to keep her son away from his father, she didn’t want him to be like him so she just simply avoided whenever her son questioned to know about his father most of the time.
“I’m sorry bud but he won’t be there, you know that your dad has gone on a long business trip right?” she said sadly looking at her son as he lightly nodded his head looking on the ground.
Her heart wrenching when she saw sadness in her son’s eyes.
“How about we go to Baskin-Robbins after you come back from your first day of school?” his eyes lit up at the thought of ice cream as he hugged his mother having that glint of happiness again. A sigh of relief left her mouth as she smiled calmly.
The weekend came around fast. Nat fixed her son’s tie getting him ready for one of her friend’s wedding. As soon as she was ready she grabbed her son’s hand as they walked their car.
The wedding was at a beach, making her remember the day she got married on a beach just like this, as he had insisted it. Oddly, the decorations were also very familiar to her wedding. They had the same type of lilies and the lighting too. shrugging it off she went to look for her friend as she had her little one in her arms, while he snuggled into his mother’s neck.
She saw a huge room, thinking this could be the bride’s room she entered without knocking. The moment she entered the room she saw the most unexpected person standing in front of her.
Her eyes widened at the sight, he was wearing a suit along with a lily on his blazer. His couch was filled with gifts and at that moment she realized who the groom was. It was Jae.
“DADDY?” her son chirped happily, looking up at his father. He froze when he locked his eyes with hers. It had been years since he had seen her. His head snapped towards the child she was holding onto. Calling him daddy made his mouth fall open.
Her son’s voice made her snap out as she backed away, holding her son tightly and turned on heels to be far away from him. but something stopped her in her tracks, a hand holding onto her arm.
“Nat...” he gently turned her around. No words came out of her mouth; she just kept looking at the ground. “Is he mine?” he asked her as he lifted her chin with his hand. “You look like my daddy from the pictures!” her son spoke as he looked at his mother to confirm his doubt. “Yes.” Her voice came out low, almost as a whisper. Her son jumped happily now looking at his father. He made grabby hands towards his father wanting to be in his arms. Jae swiftly took his son into his embrace as he admired him with loving eyes while his son played with his ears and hair.
He realised what he had missed all these years. If only he would have controlled his anger and not lash onto his wife every single time, they would have been a happy family right now.
Nat watched her son as he was too happy to be in his father arms, the image almost melted her but then all the memories came back. Taking her son back into her arms, she looked at Jae with anger in her eyes. Her son shined when he was taken away from his father.
“Little bud I’m sorry but your dad is busy right now, he has a wedding to attend, how about he meets you after that?” she calmly tried to convince her son as he nodded eagerly.
“After your wedding you can call upon a lawyer, the custody will stay under me and if you want you can see him twice a week only. Rest we will discuss later on.” She coldly said as she left his room. Running back to her car as she drove back to her house.
Next day she woke up to her bell ringing, lazily getting up she walked towards the door and opened it to see who it was. It was Jae, with just one look at him she remembered yesterday’s event.
“I expected you take some days after your wedding day, but I see you are too eager to snatch your son away from me right!?” she said with a faked laughing at him but it soon stopped when she heard the words leaving his mouth. “I didn’t get married Nat… I called it off.”
“Why…?” she asked him with a bewildered look. Before he could speak another word she spoke again.
“After all those years when you suddenly know about your child who you abandoned along with me, you come back now…? And on top of that you called off your wedding just to show me what? That you want us back after ignoring all what had you done before!?” she shouted at him.
All Jae could do at this moment was to look down at the ground, ashamed of all his actions that he had done on the past. He knew Nat was absolutely right on that and he deserved all the shouting and madness from her, maybe those also wasn’t even enough to redeem myself.
Nat was panting heavily as she let those words out, she was blurred out by her anger that she had held all these years. At that moment small steps were heard coming towards them from the upstairs.
Turning their head into that direction, they saw their little boy walking lazily while rubbing his eyes as he held his favourite pink plushy rabbit in his hands. The moment he could see clearly; his eyes went wide at the sight in front of him.
“You come back daddy!” he yelled happily running towards his father as he wrapped his arms around his legs with a wide smile on his face.
Jae bent down to pick him up in his arms as he twirled him around, making his son giggle. The sound of their giggling and the smiles upon their faces made Nat stare at them in awe. Looking at the breathtakingly view her eyes suddenly filled with tears. She realized everything she ever wanted was right here, right now, these moments. Now her tears started to weep down on her face as she lets out a silent sob.
Both of the boys snapped their heads to look at her only to realised that she was weeping with tears. Looking at his mother cry in front of him, tears welled up in his eyes too.
“Mommy I’m sorry…. I love you too… please don’t cry…” her son’s lips quivered as he spoke. The poor boy thought that his mother felt unloved by him as he’s overly in love with his daddy just now. Shaking her head, she looked up at him wiping the small tears off his soft cheeks.
Then while cupping his son’s chubby soft face, “No bud these are not sad tears, they’re happy tears. Mommy is overjoyed to see her cutie pie and his daddy playing together.” Wiping her tears too, she looked at Jae with a deadly gaze in the eyes.
“One chance, just one chance Jae! If you messed this once again, I promise you that you will be out of our lives for GOOD!” nodding his head silently he smiled with his deep dimple showing up at her, relieved that he got his another golden chance in redemption for his past mistakes and promising to himself not to mess it up ever again.
“I promise Nat, that this time I’ll treat you better than I was before either as a father or a husband.” He finished his vouch while looking at both of them. A sigh of relief left her mouth as she was so drained from everything that had just happened to her since yesterday.
“Now don’t just keep standing there, come on in to the house, I’m going to prep up some breakfast.”
“SOMETIMES, TWO PEOPLE HAVE TO FALL APART TO REALIZE HOW MUCH THEY NEED TO FALL BACK TOGETHER”
