The Vampire Lestat/Satan's Night Out being a band just breaks the reality for me
Book TVL is an alternate universe and Lestat was only aiming to be the biggest one hit wonder in existence.*
We never hear of the other band members again in the entire series. Did they get eaten? Did they die? Why isn't Viktor the Lestat clone trying to reach out to mortals who knew his dad? His mom is the one (known) groupie! Viktor has no opinions on that album at all. All the band babies have some opinion, even if it's like "I don't care for it. I like other things better."
I forgot about Salamander. But seriously, an 80s band that is big enough to fill a stadium has no extant groupies even years later.
None of the other characters in universe, named, unnamed say anything about the quality of the music coming from the band?
Nobody's interested in singing it or humming anything? Or copying whatever moves he makes in the music videos? That band is supposedly so big and in constant rotation and nobody's memorized anything yet? Mortals don't have parts of the song on loop in their brains? Nobody's dressing up like characters from the videos?
I guess a lot of money gets thrown around to make the band happen in two weeks, and a lot of money gets thrown around to hush people up, but um... how are they going to track down every single polaroid and home video and bootleg cassette tape of all the tailgates in the parking lot? Or in the stadium? Do we really think that Marius is the only one asking for cassettes & videos to watch when the band's album and videos are released?
Gotta get goth lucky at the Cow Palace. Not pictured: the insane amount of lighters and hairspray needed for that perfect 1980s experience and hair.
In the last three books of the series, they make a big deal of how Lestat wrote his books and that album for other vampires. The music at the court is: Notker and his undead child vampire choir, Sybelle, & Antoine. Nobody's trying to have Lestat plug in an amp (or a chamber music adaptation, a lyre, violin, harpsichord, whatever) to sing or play any of these famed songs from The Vampire Lestat album as part of a ceremony. Songs that told stories predate novels by quite a bit, the Iliad and the Odyssey were sung and a lot of these vampires are ancient. Also it's super ancien regime to make the court listen to you perform. And for some inexplicable reason, all of the other vampires think that reproducing Vampire Versailles Sun King style is the most sensible form of government. Nobody's having these other musical vampires adapt and arrange these songs either as part of their official projects.
There's no indication at all that these vampires are aware of the relative level of their own talent and certainly not Lestat I'M BLONDE BITCH de Lioncourt.
I am not even touching what was on the charts and contemporaneous with when TVL was published.
