E
Why? Why E? Lemme tell y’all something as a French speaker.
If you need to shorten Enjolras’ name, you should be using Enj. Enj in French is pronounced like “Ahn•Je” (I’m trying) which is exactly the same as the French word for angel, ‘Ange’. I feel this is appropriate for angelically good looking Enjolras, who in the brick I s compared to Saint-Just, ‘the angel of death’. Also, doesn’t E just sound clunky?
Why then, is Grantaire called R? It’s from the sounds and meaning of his name. R in French is pronounced “Aire” (roll the r), which happens to be the last part of Grantaire. The first part of his name, “Grant” kind of sounds like the French word for big, “Grand”. When people say Grantaire, they’re saying “Big R” or “Capital R”, therefore R. Also canonically Grantaire signs his name “R”.
If you shorten Enjolras x Grantaire to ExR I’m not that mad, but a good ship name might be Enjoltaire which many people use. I understand that’s harder to spell, so ExR is good.
It just. I don’t like calling him E, especially in conversation. Try saying aloud “Hey E, how are you” and you might see what I mean.
