i'm reclaiming my time and that's 100% fine! #repost β’ @coachhenness Image reads: "Being severed from my ethnic culture was not my choice. Reclaiming pieces of my ethnic culture is my choice."β£ β£ Inconvenient truth: I probably would've been severed from my Chinese ethnic culture even if I hadn't been adopted. I'd have been raised by white biological relatives anyway.β£ β£ So. While I cannot fabricate a relational connection to Chinese culture that is handed down through family ties, I can seek out and establish my own ethnic culture and thereby reclaim something akin to it. β£ β£ The key is that doing this is my choice. It is a choice I have a right to make. It is a choice I can control. β£ β£ I cannot control how much I will or will not learn about my own ancestry. But I can control how much I learn and embrace about being a #mixedChinese American.β£ β£ Having not had that knowledge, culture or identity handed down through natural family relations does not make me any less the descendant of Taishanese immigrants. Reclaiming a sense of that identity, to me, is a way to honor my ancestors and to appreciate who I am in a more complete way.β£ β£ #transracialadoptee #biracial #mixedasian #transracialadoption #myheritage #ethnicity #multiethnic #adopteevoices #ethnicheritage #mixedblessing #mixedbag #identity https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ4azF3MQ4_/?utm_medium=tumblr
@gbnanfei: "My names MaΓ«lle S. I want to thank you for everything you are doing for #mixedkids like us. You're touching way more people than in the US. Im from France & of #Asian descent. Ive always felt like a bastard growing up. I was glad to find your page, it helped me a lot. π I usually dont speak out much, but with the rise of #Asianhate in the US & in Europe because of Covid, I feel that Asian people, western people of Asian descent & #mixedAsian people need more representation. Im #French; half #White, half #Chinese. Growing up being the only Asian kid at school in the countryside of France, I struggled a long time to accept my appearance & my Chinese heritage. No matter where I was on Earth, I always felt like a foreigner: I wasnt Chinese enough, nor French (white) enough. Eventually I moved to Paris thinking I would find more people like me. I was subjected to #racism on a daily basis, but I tried my best to save my moms heritage by learning her native language, culture & kept visiting her family in China every summer. Going back & forth between China & France soon made me feel like an outcast, no matter how hard I tried to fit amongst Chinese or White French people. Ive changed my appearance many times, trying to pass for White & at other times, trying to pass for Chinese to be accepted, but I finally broke this harmful cycle. 3 years ago, I cut all my hair & gave up on my looks. I kept focusing only on my studies, then on saving money so I could complete a Kungfu training session at the Shaolin temple. It helped me to let go of the identity crisis & depressive mental state I was stuck in for 5 years. Now Im free to be me again. No matter how hard you try to fit in, it doesnt matter if you dont speak both of your parents languages, you're still both. No matter what they tell you, dont let them split yourself, you will always be both. Dont let them make you feel like you dont belong, you belong to both! I came to understand this rather late. But Im glad did. To all my friends of Asian descent : you matter. We matter. Lets stop hating ourselves, sacrificing our parents heritage to fit in & start embracing ourselves as a whole. π«π·π¨π³.. https://www.instagram.com/p/CNX4Jr-FN1o/?igshid=84cwsyeobi5h
