There's smt I can't fully articulate about the very different reactions I got from my parents after we watched sinners together.
It was the montage of the community building up the bar at the end of the movie, before smoke killed the klansmen that got my dad. Seeing them get off their work trucks, worn and tired, coming together for what they don't know to be their one and only night of freedom is something my dad really latched to.
My mom, on the other hand. I don't think she really absorbed it. And yeah, she can be jumpy, it's a horror movie so she's gonna shy away but, in regards to everything else she had... Nothing. Nothing to say at all. And after the movie was finished, I remember how my dad looked at me, how he pursed his lips and frowned, about to say the same thing he's been saying for a while now, "your mom doesn't really get it." And it just. Idk if I can really explain that feeling of knowing there's a part of your world that your parent may never fully understand, or that they don't WANT to understand, something that feels like such a universal, all encompassing truth for you that just isn't for them.
Same thing happened when we tried watching blackkklansmen. My mom left halfway through the movie because it upset her, the racism. We tried just turning it off so we could still watch movies with her but she told us to keep the movie on and she just went to bed. I think that's her go-to: saying the subject upsets her and that's why she can't stay and absorb it. There's nothing wrong with being upset, and having limits to the harmful things you consume but. If it gets to a point where every time your child or your husband is venting about covert racism they have to encounter, you begin to defend it? I think it's sort of getting old.

Forever will defend all mixed race people. Even if you are like 1/12 a race and the rest the way white idc you are valid and I love you.
You have a whole bunch of races? God thats so beautiful and diverse I love you.
You're mixed but not white so you don't see any real representation, and you never feel included in conversation about biraciality?? I love you I understand.
You're mixed with white and your own people only see you as white, therefore only looking at you with bitterness? I see you and you're amazing I love you.
In this world it's always about picking a side and nobody sees the beauty and diversity of mixed races and it sucks. It's not about one side versus the other, you're not responsible for your ancestors. Just be you, because you are amazing and wonderful.
I will forever advocate for all of you because we have far too much hate and nobody deserves to be put down for being born how they are :3
BRO YOURE RIGHT THO?? The hate is crazy—if people find comfort in seeing a spider-man they can relate to, that’s great??? The whole point they’re fighting for is that black representation makes them feel seen??? Miles makes biracial people feel seen too???
People pmo, please ignore the hate and stay safe gang :(
Yeeppp fun fact everyone hates biracial people. Like you'd be surprised (unless you're biracial anon lol) by how normalized racism to biracial people is. I've heard people call us mixed breed, I know that my mom (she's also biracial) was always sexualized and called an oreo in a derogatory way growing up, and we're just not seen as equals to our own races 😭
And I wrote a WHOLE lot of text rambling so feel free to read it all or skip to the last few paragraphs I just had a lot to say because this topic GETS ME I hate how much people don't care about biracial people bro 😭
The stupid thing is--miles isn't the only remotely black character 😭😭😭 the spiderverse movies are literally some of the most diverse media out there but nobody is ever satisfied.
I think there's definitely some grudge held against biracial people for 'taking black roles' cuz often there's media that will be like "we're so diverse!!" And there's one biracial character. And in media if someone's biracial it's almost ALWAYS with white. And black or whatever race people often see that as erasure or white washing, which isn't fair to the biracial actors but it also makes sense in a way why people would think that, because it's not 100 percent inaccurate.
Buuuuut that way of thinking is also not 100 percent okay. Biracial/Mixed people often are pressured to pick a side or "claim" a side, which is super unfair because the whole point is that we aren't one or the other. It doesn't matter if you're 1/2 or 1/12, if you grew up with the two separate cultures or whatnot, you have the mix race experience. It doesn't make you less biracial because there's two races even if there's more of one than the other.
I say that because people often use the argument of "he's only 1/4 Puerto Rican" to say that he's basically black. If that's the case Miles is still biracial like it or not 😭 and like I am lowkey passionate about defending this because I'm 1/4 black and I know for a fact it doesn't make you less biracial. I still have a black grampa and a biracial mom and every time I am with them I can tell I'm not 'just white'. And Miles clearly has the biracial experience, I loved his interactions with his mom in the second movie as well as his interactions with his dad. Also his interactions with his uncle Aaron were just so good. There is a subtle difference in the two cultures and I love how they include that.
And like Miles being biracial isn't solely for making biracial people seen--even if he is some of the best rep we have--his entire character arc aligns with it. It's another reason I don't like black people saying he's just black, the whole theme is "imma do both even if you say I cant". Miles wouldn't claim one side or the other his whole THING is doing both.
ANYWAY sorry for the ramble had to get an essay out there lmao. I'm lowkey becoming a bit of an advocate for the biracial people because I can and Ive been thinking about researching and talking about it more. With how much hate that comes around I just have to be louder with how much I care because I lowkey grew up hating myself and in a constant identity crisis, like many other biracial people.
And you don't have to worry about me, I don't take the hate seriously. Any grown ass adult telling a minor to kill themself is MUCH more of a loser than I will ever be :)) thank you for the ask, it was a good excuse to type a whole bunch of shit. It's good to know I've got people that care :3

There was a tiktok that was like "black people don't have enough rep. Black people have claimed Miles Morales. Miles should be played by a black actor"
I left ONE reply saying "It's not about erasing your rep, it's about erasing ours. Like it or not, Miles is canonically biracial"
I got a LOT of responds. 70 perfect of them was "miles isnt biracial" or "miles isnt biracial he's bi ethnic".
20 percent of them was "too bad he's mostly black so black people claimed him"
And 10 percent of them were death threats or telling me to stfu.
