i'm reclaiming my time and that's 100% fine! #repost • @coachhenness Image reads: "Being severed from my ethnic culture was not my choice. Reclaiming pieces of my ethnic culture is my choice." Inconvenient truth: I probably would've been severed from my Chinese ethnic culture even if I hadn't been adopted. I'd have been raised by white biological relatives anyway. So. While I cannot fabricate a relational connection to Chinese culture that is handed down through family ties, I can seek out and establish my own ethnic culture and thereby reclaim something akin to it. The key is that doing this is my choice. It is a choice I have a right to make. It is a choice I can control. I cannot control how much I will or will not learn about my own ancestry. But I can control how much I learn and embrace about being a #mixedChinese American. Having not had that knowledge, culture or identity handed down through natural family relations does not make me any less the descendant of Taishanese immigrants. Reclaiming a sense of that identity, to me, is a way to honor my ancestors and to appreciate who I am in a more complete way. #transracialadoptee #biracial #mixedasian #transracialadoption #myheritage #ethnicity #multiethnic #adopteevoices #ethnicheritage #mixedblessing #mixedbag #identity https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ4azF3MQ4_/?utm_medium=tumblr
