Happy Mixed Girl Monday and Happy Native American Heritage Month! 🪶🍾
Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each November to honor the history, culture, and contributions of Native Americans, which includes American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian communities. As usual, I am honoring the contributions of mixed race Native Americans. Established by a 1990 presidential proclamation, the month is a time to celebrate diverse traditions, raise awareness about tribal nations, and acknowledge the sacrifices and challenges Native Americans have faced and continue to face. It is also a time to educate others about the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and traditions of Native American communities.
The observance has roots in a 1916 event called American Indian Day, but was officially established as National American Indian Heritage Month by President George H.W. Bush.
The month includes various events like festivals, concerts, and educational programs held across the country. Check out bia.gov/NNAHM, nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov and other government agencies, museums, and organizations provide resources and host events to commemorate the month. Be sure to look up events in your area and support!
And if you did all your shopping or don't participate in Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving is National Native American Heritage Day!
