They had a lot to prep. El was off with that new girl⌠who was somehow her sister? Steve had learned to roll with the constant flood of new information.
Hopper and the other adults- oh shit is he one of the adults now? He didnât feel like an adult. Life had been a whirlwind since he was seventeen and fell in love with a bookish girl that ended up changing everything.
Anyway- the adults had all kinds of shit to prep, but the kids? The party was anxiously pacing. There was some comforting hugs still being directed at Will after his emotional confession.
Steve had immediately pulled Robin away once everyone separated. He knew she was involved the minute he heard Tammyâs name. He also knew she could probably use a minute to fall apart and a hug of her own. All of that hit as close to home as he expected it would.
Vickie was close behind, offering Robin a comfort and security all her own. Steve was so happy for them. He gave Vick a pat on the shoulder. She beamed up at him in her typical sunshiny way. He was glad learning the truth hadnât taken that from her. Robin was resilient like that too. They deserved each other.
Steve looked out at the group. Mike and Nancy were having a quiet conversation. Heâd heard Mrs. Wheeler had taken out three demo dogs on her own. What else should he have expected from Nanceâs mother?
Will and Jonathan were still talking. Joyce was hovering between them and Hopper, getting everything ready but still trying to win the most present mother award. Steve smiled.
He felt lighter having finally reached stable ground with Dustin again. It was like a piece of himself had been missing for too long. Dustin was fidgeting near the door. They still had a while before they could do anything really.
Steve glanced over and Lucas, Erica, and Max. It was amazing having her back. If Steve was being honest, he wasnât the optimist that these kids were. He never really thought theyâd get her back after all this time. He has never been so happy to be proven wrong.
He realized something, seeing the families gravitating towards one another. Steve quickly crossed the room.
âMrs. Byers?â He tried to get her attention. They hadnât ever really talked much.
She looked at him in surprise, but quickly that gentle expression came over her. She stepped closer, speaking softly to him. âDid you need something? Are you okay?â
Such a mom, Steve thought fondly.
âI was actually wondering if we had time for me to take some of the kids to see their parents before we head out. Just a quick trip out for anyone that wants to. I just figured seeing you guys that some of the other kids might want a chance to say-â he stopped himself, mouth going dry.
Joyce nodded, giving him a knowing look. âI understand. Yes, absolutely. We still have a lot to do. Youâve got an hour at least.â She smiled. âYouâre a good kid, Steve.â
The words hit him in the chest, but he smiled through it.
Steve offered a ride to everyone, just in case they needed to see someone before they went into this mess. Lucas, Erica, and Dustin quickly agreed. Mike and Nancy were adamant theyâd see their parents when they had Holly back. Max thought it would be too much to explain to her mother that she was awake and immediately has to leave. Robin hesitantly agreed, but Vickie politely declined. She wasnât sure sheâd have to courage to come with them if she went home now.
Steve piled everyone in the van, silently mourning the Beamer again for a moment. He made sure everyone in the back was secure, Robin beside him in the passenger seat, and they were off.
Dustin house was closest. He went inside while the others waited in the van. Steve watched the door.
Around ten minutes later, Dustin came outside, wiping his eyes as he climbed into the van.
Steve turned back. âYou okay?â
Dustin caught his eye, nodding. âYeah. Iâm good. Thank you for this. Another good idea.â He smiled, eyes still a little wet.
At the Sinclairâs, Lucas told Erica not to do anything to make them worry, to which Erica informed him that she wasnât a dumbass. They were inside for around fifteen minutes. Lucas left standing a little taller. Erica stopped him just outside the house, talking to him on the porch. Steve tried not to watch. It felt private. He did catch the hug they shared before crossing the lawn and getting back in the van.
Finally, he made the familiar drive to Robinâs house. She took a deep breath before shooting him a look.
âShe tries. You love her cause she tries,â he echoed back the words sheâd said to him before after a long vent session about her mother.
Robin smiled, climbing out of the van and heading inside.
Steve turned back to the kids. âAnywhere else we need to hit before we head back?â
They all shared a look, a silent conversation before shaking their heads.
âNope, all good back here. Your house is the last stop,â Dustin called back.
Steve waved his hand dismissively. âNo need. Robâs is the last stop.â
There was a beat of silence.
âYou donât wanna see your parents before we go? This was your idea⌠we figured youâd wanna stop and see them too,â Dustin questioned.
âI was just thinking of you guys. My folks arenât even home, so thatâs not really an option,â Steve shrugged.
âArenât home? You havenât been home since like two days ago. How would you know theyâre not home?â Dustinâs brows pinched together.
âOh, they were on a trip went the comandos came in and quarantined the town.â Steve glanced back at Robinâs house.
âWhat? Wait- youâve just been living alone?â Lucas interjected.
âThatâs nuts. Did you know that?â Erica turned to Dustin, who was staring at Steve like a deer in headlights.
âSteve⌠what the hell?â Dustin breathed.
Steve frowned. âWhat? Iâm not a kid. Itâs not a big deal. They were pretty pissed about the house for a while, but they mostly stay at their Chicago place anyway.â
âYouâve just been, what- alone?â Dustin sputtered.
Steve shrugged, suddenly feeling the weight of all their attention. âI mean⌠yeah?â
Dustin deflated. âSteve, why didnât you say anything?â
âIt didnât seem worth mentioning. Theyâre always traveling. Iâm pretty used to living on my own. Also- again, Iâm 21.â
âDoesnât mean shit. Weâve all seen enough to know itâs dangerous to be alone,â Erica spoke up.
âYeah man. Sorry I never even thought to ask,â Lucas added.
Steve shook his head. âNo need for apologies. Really. Iâm all good. Plus, Iâm basically always at the radio with Rob.â
âNo, Iâm really sorry, Steve. We should be looking out for each other,â Dustinâs tone was firm.
Steve opened his mouth, then closed it again. He nodded.
Robin came back soon after. She climbed into the passenger seat with a huff. âWell, Iâll have you know- my hair is doing that weird thing again, and I could stand to wear a bit more makeup because Iâm getting too pale,â she informed him in that mocking tone she used to imitate her mother.
Steve grinned, giving Robinâs hand a squeeze.
She smiled. âBut Iâm still glad we did this. Thank you.â
Steve drove them back to the station. He sat in the van for a moment after everyone climbed out to rejoin the group.
However this all ended, Steve wasnât worried about losing time with his family. They were all right here with him.
