In early February the first of the native solitary bees came by my garden, a small mining bee of sorts. This is likely the season’s last. A metallic green bee (Agapostemon sp.). Here is a cool "Sweat Bee" that I found while bug hunting in Estacada, Oregon this past July. I'm guessing that this one is Agapostemon virescens or the Metallic Green Bee.

Agapostemon sp...but which one? An unusual individual, lacking the white abdominal stripes typical of others that are about this time of year. Maybe it is a new species to me, or perhaps they are worn off. Agapostemon sweat bee - Look closely and you'll notice a little dark insect in front of the bee. I see them everywhere. What is that? Well, today I decided to find out. It's called a thrip. A web search to learn about them will turn up multitudes of pest control websites. They do not seem to be a bother to me, so I'll just share this interesting quote from Wikipedia "They fly only weakly, and their feathery wings are unsuitable for conventional flight; instead, thrips exploit an unusual mechanism, clap and fling, to create lift using an unsteady circulation pattern with transient vortices near the wings." There you have it, "clap and fling."
