Metallic green bee of the Agapostemon type, excavating a new nest site in the ground. What fun it is to watch this happen! She probed the soil for a half hour before finding just the right spot. When she started to dig, her work was fast and impressively powerful. In no time she had a big throw mound beside the entrance and had disappeared for several minutes at a time beneath the earth. I leave bare spots between the flowers in my garden beds to provide nest sites. A very tiny yellow/green bee that I call the chartreuse mason bee. Lack of common names is a nagging problem in the bee world. Here she is seen in a very rare moment of pause, peering out of her nest hole in a set of bee boards. These beauties are as skiddish as an alley cat with fleet wings as fast as a jet. They enter and exit the bee hotel like tiny green flashes, an event so fast one could be convinced these bees can routinely break the sound barrier. I shot hundreds of photos but maybe one or two actually have bees in them. Green sweat bee (Augochlorini sp.) on New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae). The off season brings great opportunity to go on a safari through my old photos. This one from September of 2014, when I first decided to take pictures of bees. For those with an interest in photography, this was shot with an old Panasonic FZ-50 point and shoot, which after attaching a 2.5x magnifying lens on the front of it and using felt as a diffuser for the built in flash, it was a beautiful macro rig for about $100. Although the camera was frustratingly slow, its small sensor allowed it to take photos with striking depth of field that would be impossible with a DSLR. Achieving deep depth of field can be the greatest challenge to a macro photographer.
