I just realized I basically forgot all the little details you requested,,, whoops. But I promise it is still really fluffy and cute and I hope you like it as much as I do.
Sighing contently, you shift on the rock, letting one of your feet dangle in the water. The sun was shining and you could feel its warmth as you sunbathed, listening to the waves lap around you.
It was nice to relax by yourself and you could feel the stress from everyday life wash away. Leaning up, you looked out at the horizon, admiring the clear sky and the breaks in the waves.
Out of the corner of your eye, you see something move, gaining your attention. Focusing, you see a few ripples in the water before someone - no, something, pops up just a few feet away from where you’re sitting. Gasping, you pull your leg back on the rock. The sudden noise and motion startle the creature, and he darts back a couple feet, sinking so that only his eyes and the webbed tips of his ears are visible.
“Uh, hello” you greet cautiously.
The creature’s ears twitch and perk up before he swims closer, rising so that his whole face could be seen. You’re taken aback by his appearance. His brown hair framed his face, water dripping from the ends and his eyes were like mini oceans of their own, deep blue and enchanting in their own right. While staring at his eyes, you notice them flicker down for a second, his attention seemingly stuck on something.
Following his gaze, you realize he’s looking at your feet, currently crossed. Still a bit unsure of the creature’s intentions, you hesitantly stick one of your legs out, stretching your foot towards him.
At first, he retreats back a few inches. “It’s ok, you can feel it if you want.”
The creature glances between your face and your foot a few times, before slowly coming forward again. One of his hands stretches out of the water, and he quickly taps your leg before pulling his hand back, almost as though it burned him, and you have to bite back a laugh at his almost childish demeanor. When he realized nothing happened, and nothing would happen, the creature touches your leg again, this time leaving his hand on it. You could see the blue-tinted webbing between his fingers as he trails his hand over your leg and down to your foot, making you squirm at the ticklish sensation. The creature grabs your ankle with his other hand, effectively keeping your foot in his grip as he applies more pressure, finally making you laugh.
Looking up at your face, the creature smiles mischievously, tightening his grip on your ankle and swiping his fingers across your foot again.
Writhing in a vain attempt to escape, you feel your stomach begin to ache from how hard you’re laughing. “Stop, stop!” you manage to gasp out, but your pleas fall on deaf ears.
Finally, the creature has mercy on you and releases your ankle. Catching your breath, you look at the creature, no longer feeling wary of your new acquaintance, “You’re kind of mean, you know that?”
The creature grins from ear to ear, swimming even closer to you.
“So what’s your name?” you ask.
Immediately he answers with some kind of shrill noise, and you wince at the unfamiliar language.
“Was that your name?” The creature nods. “Llllaaance?” you try to repeat, only for the creature to scrunch up its nose and shake its head. He repeats his name, slower, in the hopes that you’ll get it right. “Lance, got it.” you decide, ignoring Lance’s objections.
As the days pass, you find yourself returning to Lance more and more often, until your visits with each other become daily expectations.
Walking to the end of the peninsula, you see Lance sitting on the edge, curling his tail in and out of the water. He perks up when he hears you approaching, smiling and waving in your direction. As you get closer, you hear him make a few clicks and whistles. “That means hello, right?” you ask. Lance nods, repeating the noise slowly. It takes a few tries, but eventually you get it right and watch as Lance lights up and clicks with excitement. You two spend the afternoon like that, teaching each other various words and celebrating when the other gets it right.
“Wait.” Lance interrupts, making you cock your head in confusion.
“Wait?” you repeat, trying to figure out what he meant.
“Wait,” he confirms, before hopping off the rock and diving beneath the water.
When he finally pops up a few minutes later, you can see he’s excited. “Gift,” he says simply, stretching a hand towards you and depositing a shell into your lap. This has become a sweet little habit of his, him giving you gifts that he’d think you’d like. Sometimes it’s small pieces of coral, other times it’ll be a rock. Once he gave you a rusty bottle cap, not seeming to be able to distinguish the difference between trash and treasure. Today he gave you a shell.
Picking it up, you carefully turn it over in your hands, tracing your thumb over the intricate swirls and edges and cooing over the colors. Smiling, you glance towards Lance, who is still wading in the water with his eyes fixated on you. “Thank you.” Lance smiles and makes a few clicks, hauling himself out of the water to sit back next to you.
But as sweet as the merman could be, he was twice as mischievous.
It had only been a few days since he gave you the shell but already his charm was replaced with malice. Alright well maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration on your end, but you didn’t care enough to make the distinction as you currently flailed in the water, Lance chittering with laughter a few feet away.
“If you sing that song one more time, I swear to god!” you threaten, pulling yourself out of the water. Lance pays no mind to your irritation, still caught up in his own amusement as he swims in swirls. Just a few minutes before, Lance decided to ‘thrall’ you, singing to lure you into the water without you even realizing, leaving you now sopping wet.
Grumbling, you march off the rocks and lay in the sand, ignoring Lance as he calls out to you.
His calls get more insistent and still, you ignore him, until finally you hear a wet ‘smack’ followed by a dragging noise. Peeking your eyes open, you see Lance crawling out of the water, his hair dripping over his eyes and his tail trailing behind him. He looks like something from a horror movie.
Closing your eyes, it only takes a few moments for you to feel him poking at your cheek, making a few soft clicks. You stay quiet for a moment, but eventually feel yourself beginning to cave. Opening your eyes, you see Lance leaning over you. “What?” you huff. Lance clicks urgently, waving a hand in the air as he tries to express his meaning.
“Yeah yeah, whatever. I forgive you.”
Lance smiles and curls his tail for a moment, then flops down into the sand next to you. You two stay like that for a while, the sun drying the two of you off. Finally, you sit up, taking a moment to stretch before looking at the merman lying next to you. Lance’s eyes are closed and his arms are stretched behind his head, looking completely content. Your eyes drift down and you study his tail, watching as the various scales of blue reflect in the sunlight.
Without even realizing, your hand hovers above the scales. “Prrrp?” Lance hums, the question clear.
You flush at being caught and draw your hand back. “Er- is it ok if I touch it?”
Lance smiles and lazily scoots his tail over so it’s laying across your lap. It’s heavy and you can feel all the muscle as you run your hands across it. Tracing the different vein patterns, you hear Lance purr as he closes his eyes again. The sun has dried him completely and eventually, you can feel Lance begin to shift uncomfortably from the heat. At first, you think perhaps you’re overstimulating him, and withdraw your hands. However, as you stand, Lance moves so he’s sitting up and he points to the water before looking at you expectantly.
It takes a moment, but then you realize what he wants. “Absolutely not,” you object.
Lance pouts and stretches his hands towards you, imitating a toddler that wants to be picked up. “Stuck,” he says simply.
At this you roll your eyes, “You are not stuck, you’re lazy.”
Lance ignores this. “Stuck,” he repeats.
Your shoulders slouch and you groan in reluctance. “Fine.” You grab Lance’s hands and begin dragging him towards the water, feeling his deadweight already hurting your back. The water laps around your ankles when you finally deposit Lance and he, rather ungracefully, wriggles deeper into the water. You think you pulled a muscle.
The following day it’s rather cold out, though you still keep your unspoken promise to go see Lance. You were sitting on the edge of your usual rock, scarfing down one half of your sandwich when Lance swam up. He’s watching you with an unusual amount of interest, and then it dawns on you that he’s looking at your sandwich.
“Do you want some?” you offer, rummaging through your bag for the other half and holding it out to him. “Don’t drop it,” you warn when Lance takes it.
For a moment you watch with amusement as Lance picks apart the individual slices. “No you idiot,” you tease, “You have to hold it like this.” you hold up your own sandwich for Lance to see. His eyes widen with realization and he nods, sloppily putting his sandwich back together. “Yeah, that’s right. Now take small bites, you don’t want to just scarf it down.” Lance hums in understanding.
Oh, he takes small bites alright, taking your advice a little too seriously and pecking at it like a baby bird. At this rate it takes him a while to finish, and he beams up at you when he’s done.
“Good job.” you praise with a laugh, earning a toothy grin from your friend. “Is the water cold?” you ask. Lance shakes his head and you dip your toes in the water, only to squawk and immediately retract them. “Urgh, you lied! It’s freezing.”
Lance smiles and shakes his head, finding your antics just as amusing as you did his. “Close eyes,” he suddenly demands.
You narrow your eyes at him, “No, I don’t trust you. You’re gonna pull a trick.”
The merman shakes his head again, “No trick! Close your eyes.”
Reluctantly, you comply. Not even a second after you do, you feel Lance’s lips pressed against yours. It’s sloppy and Lance is clearly inexperienced, but damn if he isn’t trying his best.
When you two finally break apart, you shift so that you’re closer to the water and Lance. He smiles up at you and puts his hands on your face, somewhat squishing your cheeks together. Laughing, albeit a bit muffled, you run one of your hands through Lance’s hair. “Wanna try that again?”
Lance nods, webbed ears twitching with excitement and you slowly lean forward for another kiss. Distracted by the sensation, it’s too late by the time you notice Lance pulling you forward. The instant chill of the water makes your scream of surprise come out more like a choke, and Lance chitters with his usual laughter, this time holding you to his chest so you don’t have to flail about. “You’re lucky you’re cute,” you pout.
Lance smiles, bumping his forehead against yours, “I love you.”
