To ever think that aliens could be this cruel, kidnapping humans and other aliens from their home planet and forcing them to go against each other in some twisted game. The aliens here were nothing like what was depicted in the stories you had read as a child. I guess you couldn’t expect much, though, for those were just how wannabe prophets described them. But here you were, backstage of this warped talent show, awaiting your turn. Part of you wanted to just get it over with, sing your heart out and show the aliens that humans weren’t just some dolls used for their entertainment. But another part of you knew what would happen if you lost. Even if it was just by one point, you would be killed and never seen again by anyone you loved or hated.
It was nearing your turn to go on stage. How would you even do this? Would you just take turns singing? Try to sing louder than your opponent? Song at the same time? What was worse was that you were one of the only humans left. You were lucky you hadn’t gone on stage at all yet, for aliens must of had a knack for singing. All you could do was pray, maybe song something to get someone, anyone’s attention that you and many others were in this mess.
One thing happened after another, and here you were, on stage, taking everything in with what little time you had. One thing that you noted was that there were also humans in the crowd, not just aliens like you had suspected. Was your kind truly this evil? Watching humans like them desperately try to survive something they didn’t willingly get theirselves into?
As you sang, you realized that the alien you were going against really just followed off of whatever hopefully sensical lyrics your anxious self could emit. Sure, the alien was better at singing than you, which made you start dwelling on the fact that you may not be alive for much longer. But you also realized that the alien just wanted to live as you and probably every other contestant does or did.
As the song came to an end, you turned your head around to glance at the points. You were 10 points behind your opponent. At that point, something in you sparked. You didn’t want to die now. How could you? You still had so much to live for. Your breathing started to get heavier and faster, realizing that if you didn’t act now, you would never be able to act ever. Then, as if your body was moving on autopilot, you bolted through the crowd. It wasn’t and would never be the safest move, but you had to do something to get away from the stage. You ran as fast as you could, the aliens grabbing and punching and smacking at you to try and hold you back. As if someone had understood the message of your music, you were grabbed by a hand that felt mostly human, and you felt your legs running faster than before to wherever this person was taking you. At that point was when your body took over and you passed out, fading out of your conscious with only the hopefulness that whoever had grabbed you didn’t have malicious intent for why they grabbed you.
The place you woke up in was not one that you were familiar with. Sure, it seemed like a hospital or some kind of medical unit. But it seemed more…futuristic? Advanced? You were more worried about if you were safe than if you were back on your home planet.
“Oh! You’re awake,” said the woman with pale blue hair on your left, snapping you out of whatever trance you felt like you were in. “How are you feeling?”
You just nodded, mouth agape. You were still too shocked and confused to form any real words. Not only did you not know if these people were safe to let your guard down around, but you could also see a guy with black hair starring at you from one of the the walls of whatever room you were in, making you you more uneasy. The kind woman seemed to take note of this and giggled softly.
“That’s Keith and I’m Allura. He may seem scary but he doesn’t truly bite, he’s actually the one that grabbed you from the sea of aliens.” Allura explains and Keith just turns his head to the side and avoids eye contacts, blushing slightly.
You mutter out a thank you and nod profusely in his direction, hoping he’d get the message.
“Where am I?” You question softly, wondering if your words could even be heard by the woman right next to your hospital bed.
“You’re on the castle of lions. A flying castle, essentially. You’re safe here.” Allura states, putting a hand over your blanket covered lap.
Before you can ask another question, Keith walks over to state his thoughts.
“What you did out there was extremely dangerous,” Keith starts, his words coming off more harsh than he wanted. “But, the commotion you caused also helped us to rescue every other contestant and most importantly, you.”
You look up at him after his last words and catch the faintest smile on his face before he starts talking again.
“We’ve seen what you’re capable of and we want to give you a chance. You can help fight alongside us against the Galran empire, or we can keep you tucked away safely until we can bring you back to earth. Your choice.” Keith declares, high gaze flashing between you and Allura.
You don’t have to think very long to decide your answer. What the ‘Galran empire’, as Keith called it, did to you and many other innocent people and aliens what unforgivable. If you had the will to run into a crowd of selfish aliens for a chance at living, you were sure you had the will to fight against those very aliens.
“I’ll fight.” You state, your voice much stronger than before.
Allura smiles while Keith thinks, as if he was thinking of what to say. Did he not like your decision? Was he just forced by Allura to say that?
Before you could jump to anymore conclusions, Keith sticks his hand out to you.
“That great to hear. Can you walk? If you’re going to fight alongside us, it would be best you met the rest of us.” Keith asks, not making eye contact with you.
You couldn’t miss the slight pink tint on his face as you took his hand and carefully got out of the hospital bed. Shockingly, you only slightly wobbled before balancing yourself on your own two feet once again, following Keith as he walked out the door with his hand still holding yours.
You looked back at Allura, wondering if this was a bad idea. The only thing you got from her was a knowing look that was not sent in your direction, but Keith’s.
