Blog #4 ABC
Growing up Chinese in the early 2000s , we had the term ABC, which meant American Born Chinese. Many “real” chinese folk used this term to distinguish the people who barely knew their culture or spoke their language. Now, that’s a form of separation within a community of your own, outside of that we still faced separation from the american public. Jin, a asian american rapper ,help break through the stigma of the term and made being an ABC a cool thing among young chinese americans. Jin Au-Yeung, made himself a name freestyle rapping, rap battling and even being the first asian american signed to a major record label (RUFF RYDERS) , little did he know, he’d act as a representative and role model for many asian americans.
For the majority of the public, there seemed to be an ironicness, having a chinese guy do rap in a predominately all black industry. In his song, “Learn Chinese”, Jin mentions how chinese people should be able to ride the railroads for free since they built them. The lyricism both help remind people of the system oppression of colored people and to also help bolster the chinese culture. In the intro, Jin is approaching a house with chinese takeout and he says:
“ The days of the pork fried rice and the chicken wings Coming to your house by me is over”
followed by:
“ Ya'll gonna learn Chinese
Ya'll gonna be Chinese
Ya'll gonna learn Chinese “
In a way, he illustrates the typical stereotypical job and part a chinese person may take part in the life of a regular day to day american. Provided that, he then begins to entice the audience with the underground life of a mob boss, which he plays. Moreover, I think this is a way Jin helps the audience gain familiar ground with Chinese people in their lives. At this time, most asian men are portrayed as wimpy, quiet and passive, but Jin takes the initiative to show that it’s possible to be straight up gangster no matter what race you are. It’s important to realize, that during the early 2000's gangster culture was celebrated and deemed cool and to be almost feared in a respectful manner. After all, many adolescents turn toward delinquency due to the underprivileged and deprived opportunities in their lives.
Even on BET(Black Entertainment) , Jin had to prepare many rap counters to racist chinese jokes. There should be no reason anyone should have to prepare for racist tactics. For Jin to be put into a spot where racism is normalized, it’s actually quite disheartening. There seems to be a long standing use of slandering asians without expecting any repercussions. Even to this day, it’s an ongoing struggle. You could say it’s a systematic oppression of asians. The system wasn’t built with asians in mind but the railroad system was definitely built by asian peoples time. It’s now time to follow the line history ,where we start to meet more people from the east. Gotta end this story like this by at least saying Ha! Peace
