Poetry in Motion The Music Video as a New Art Form History of the Swan Fairy Tales Swan fairy tales are like other fables. The origins are unknown, and all contain varying plots and different endings. George Balanchine's Swan Lake Ballet is the most frequently performed ballet in the world, and because of this, his version of a swan fairy tale is the most familiar to people and will provide the basis of discussion for the series of music video we will watch. Swan Lake Major Themes The major theme of Swan Lake ballets involves a spell that has turned swans into young girls at night, and back to swans at daybreak. In Balanchine's ballet, a white swan, Odette, and a black swan, Odile, appear as young maidens at a Ball for King Siegfried’s son, Prince Siegfried. Prince Siegfried falls in love with a maiden named Odette, but she disappears before daylight and becomes a white swan again. Odile, who also attends the ball as a maiden, leaves with Odette and changes into a black swan. Prince Siegried falls in love with Odette, and Odile falls in love with the prince. When she finds out the prince loves Odette, Odile tricks him into meeting at the lake where he proposes to her. When the prince discovers Odette has deceived him, he asks the king to break his betrothal to Odile, but the king refuses. He finds Odette and proclaims his love for her, and the king’s refusal to release him from his betrothal to Odile. Drama ensues. Balanchine's’ choreography and Tchaikovsky's haunting score for Death of the White Swan scene ends the ballet. All swan story versions involve the rejection of a deceitful swan and some combination of the prince and the two swans die. Swan Lake The Balanchine Ballet is the most demanding modern ballet because the principal dancer must dance the part of both the white swan and the black swan. This implies that they are, in essence, the same person. This leads us to Freudian theories of Swan Lake. The white swan represents the Super Ego, or the idealized part of a person's identity. The Black Swan represents the ID, the part of a person that is childlike, selfish, and destructive. Ego is not represented in the ballet, because Freud considered the Ego the regulator of the excesses of the Super Ego and the ID, and this ballet would be spoiled by the regulation of dramatic impulses and common sense.
