In your heels, you stepped onto the wet grass. The clouds were scattered across the dim sky, threatening to pour rain.
Hogwarts was larger than you expected.
All these tales about its secret passageways, appearing rooms, and wandering ghosts seemed like they were trueāno way anyone couldāve explored the entire castle.
āPosture, ladies.ā Madam Maxine demanded, glancing over her shoulder as you all walked inside the warm castle.Ā
They called it the Great Hall.
I see why they call it so Great, you thought, looking around the beautiful room.
The smell of pumpkin and cinnamon wafted through the air; you noticed flickering, floating candles lingering in the air.
We were told to find a place to sit: no assigned seating or rules. Just finding a place to sit to eat dinner.
āChloĆ©,ā You turned to your best friend. āThat table, there?ā You pointed to the table with a crimson table runner.Ā
ChloĆ© nodded. āSure. Next to thatā¦boy?ā
ā...If itās the only seat.ā
You both glided over, noticing that sitting next to the certain ginger kid would be the only option.
āWe might need to sit next to the redhead, Y/N.āĀ
āAh non alors.ā You sighed, taking a deep breath, then making your way to the boy. Tapping his shoulder politely, you murmured, āExcuse me.ā
The boy turned his head, and once he locked eyes with you, his mouth agape.
It stayed like thatāhe carefully admired your face.Ā
ChloƩ snickered behind you, a hand over her mouth.
āUmā¦may my friend and I sit next to you?ā You asked.
He blinked, lips still parted.
A bushy-haired girl who sat across from him pinched the bridge of her nose. āSeriously, Ron?ā
āUhāumāno.ā
A moment of silence as he just stared at you.
You furrowed your brows.
āAbruti,ā ChloĆ© mumbled.
The girl across from him quickly kicked him under the table.
āOuch! I mean- yes, you can sit here.ā His ears went scarlet.
A boy with glasses next to the girl coughed into his gobletāsuspiciously sounding like a laugh.
āAre we sure, ChloĆ©?ā You whispered sharply.
āThereās no other seat, Y/N,ā ChloĆ© muttered. āWe would be lucky to find one in time.ā
Sighing, you took a seat next to the ginger and ChloĆ© on your other side.Ā
He was frozen. Maybe even lovestruck.
You sighed, getting the hint that he wouldnāt be the first to speak.
āIām Y/N. This is my friend, ChloĆ©.ā You introduced yourself, hoping to break the ice.Ā
āIām Hermione. This is Harry, and that,ā Hermione pointed towards the ginger, āIs Ronald.ā
āRon.ā He corrected, clearing his throat. āN-Nice to meet you, Y/N. Andā¦ChloĆ©.ā
āLikewise.ā You nodded.Ā
You folded your hands neatly in your lap, trying to remember everything Madam Maxime had told you about making a good impression.
Don't slouch.
Smile!
Don't talk too much.
Don't. Embarrass. Beauxbatons.
You caught Ronās eye as he was mid-chew, then he quickly looked away.Ā
Two seconds later, you both looked at each other again.
āIs there a reason you keep looking at me?ā You asked, raising an eyebrow.
Ron nearly dropped his fork.
āWhaāNo!ā Ron said, looking back to his half-full plate. āSorryā¦ā
āItās okay.ā
āUmā¦so,ā Ron cleared his throat. āYouāre from Beauxbatons?ā
āYes.ā You replied shortly.
āSo youāre fromā¦France?ā He questioned. ChloĆ© suppressed a laugh beside you.
Hermione sighed. āRon.ā
āWhat?ā The ginger frowned.
āOf course sheās from France.ā
āI know. Iā¦knew that.ā
āThen whyād you ask?ā
āDouble-checking.ā
Harry let a laugh slip out, causing him to cover it up with a cough immediately. Hermione glared at him.
āWhat?ā
āBe nice, Harry.ā Hermione glared.
āI was just clearing my throat!ā Harry put his hands up in surrender.
āThese people are hectic,ā ChloĆ© whispered.Ā
You nodded in agreement with an exaggerated sigh. āAt least we will be entertained for our time here.ā
You and ChloƩ continued eating dinner silently as the three bickered.
ā
āIs it just me, or,ā ChloĆ© held onto the strap of her bookbag tighter. āThat ginger boyāwhatās his name?āis attached to you.ā
āWhat makes you say that?ā You frowned, knitting your brows.
āI donāt know, just the fact heās always looking at you with an open mouth.ā ChloĆ© rolled her eyes.Ā
You waved a dismissive hand. āThatās ridiculous, and you know that.ā
āNo, itās notāItās the start of a love story!ā She gushed.
āI already forgot his name, ChloĆ©.āĀ
āStarts with a Jā¦I think?ā
āAn R.ā
ā...Oh. Right.ā
āVery helpful, ChloĆ©.ā Walking into the Great Hall for breakfast, your eyes immediately found hisāthe redhead.Ā
ChloĆ© sighed dreamily, linking an arm with yours. āWhat did I tell you?ā
āY/N! ChloĆ©!ā Hermione called out, waving for you two to come over.Ā
Herm-own-ninnie. Is that her name? You thought in panic.
You sighed. āThey miss us already.ā
āMignonne,ā ChloĆ© smirked, following you as you walked over.Ā
Mon Dieu, what is his name? You thought, awkwardly smiling at his taken-aback face. Red. Heāll be named Red.
āGood morning,ā You greeted, taking a seat next to the ginger boy.Ā
āHi.ā He responded. āYou smell good.ā
The boy with the glassesāHarryāsnickered silently.Ā
ā...Thank you?ā You raised an unsure eyebrow.
Hermione shut her eyes for a brief moment. "He means the bacon."
Ron cleared his throat. āY-yeah, I mean this bacon smells incredible!ā
ChloĆ© scoffed beside you, and you pinched your lips in a straight line.Ā
āSoā¦ā Ron said. āHow are you two liking, um, Hogwarts?ā
āVery busy.ā You replied.
āI got lost.ā ChloĆ© frowned. āThis place is too big.ā
āSo very different than Beauxbatons?ā Hermione questioned.
āSure.ā You patted your shirt down. āItāsā¦louder.ā
A rough voice shouted somewhere down the tableāA tall, ginger boy who looked somewhat similar to Ron.
āYou owe me a Galleon, Lee!ā
āDimwit! You tricked me!ā Another voice yelled. Laughter rose from the group of boys.
āYouāll get used to this after some time.ā Hermione poked the fruit on her plate.
āYeahā¦loud,ā Ron mumbled, scratching the nape of his neck. āDo you likeā¦anythingā¦?ā
You looked at him, confused. āWhat do you mean?ā
Ronās already red face deepened. āI mean, do you have any hobbies?ā He gave you a sheepish smile.Ā
āOh, yes, many.ā You beamed. āMusicāand Iām a big fan of collecting things as well.ā
āLike what?ā Ron asked, trying to flow the conversation.
āDolls.ā
He blinked at you.
āSounds creepy, Y/N,ā Chloe whispered, giggling.
Waving a hand, you politely corrected, āNot scary dollsāthe dolls with the nice hair.ā
āOh. Right.ā Ron crookedly smiled.Ā
āOi!ā A voice called out. You turned your head back to the group of rambunctious boys.Ā
All of them were looking atā¦
You?
Ron looked as well, shocked by the sudden interruption.Ā
āIs that your girlfriend, Won-won?ā A redhead sniggered, pointing at you. The group roared in laughter. You glanced at the boy beside youāhis whole face was flushed a shade of tomato-red.
āIgnore them, Ronald,ā Hermione muttered, crossing her arms.
Ronald, you thought. Thatās his name.
āGonna go snog on her, Ronnie?ā Another redhead holleredāwho was identical to the other gingerāmore laughter from the twins and the boys around them.
Ron scoffed dismissively, looking down at the table.Ā
āDo you know them?ā You questioned.
āYeah. Theyāreā¦unfortunately my brothers.ā Ron responded. āFred and George.ā
āAre theyā¦always this boisterous?ā
āYou won't ever catch a second of them being quiet.āĀ
You hummed. āThey remind me of children.ā
āWe heard that!ā The twins said at the same time.Ā
You and Ron immediately looked at the playful redheads.
Ā Fred clutched his chest. āWeāve been insulted.ā
āBy the French, Freddie!ā George dramatically gasped.
Ron laughedāand you did too.
Your real laugh.
You hadn'tā¦expected it.
Without the nervous stammering or deeply red cheeks, his laugh was contagiousāenough that you couldn't help but giggle as well.Ā Ā
āYou didnāt deny it, Ronnie,ā George smirked. āHave you even asked her yet?ā
You didnāt know how it was possible, but Ron flushed a deeper shade of red.
āAsk her what?ā Ronās eyes went wide.
āAsked her out,ā Fred responded.Ā
Ron groaned, running a hand down his face. āOf course not, we just met.ā
āYou poor lad.ā George teased. Then, his eyes flickered to you, his lips drawn with a sad smile. āHeās been drooling over you for the past three days-ā
āShut it, George.ā Ron hissed.
āJust the truth, little brother.ā George put his hands up in retreat. āTime to make a move, yeah?ā
As the twins returned to conversation with their friends, Ron played with the hem of his shirt.
You knew how siblings wereāalways joking and teasing after little things.
Yetā¦
Ron never denied anything.Ā
And those twins sounded awfully convincing.
ā
āFleur Delacourā¦ā
ā...Sheās always been an outgoing oneā¦ā
āConnasseā¦ā
You walked past familiar Beauxbatons students as they gossiped in small circles.Ā
The Triwizard Tournament competitors had been chosenā
Viktor Krum.
Cedric Diggory.
Fleur Delacour.
ā¦and somehow, Harry Potter.
Most of the Beauxbatons girls seemed more upset about Fleur being chosen than Harry unexpectedly entering the Tournament.
You, however, had something else on your mind:
The Yule Ball.
āWhat color dress should I ask my mum to send?ā ChloĆ© piped excitedly beside you. āI was thinking something bright. Happy.ā
āHm.ā You looked her up and down. āA nice baby pink.ā
āI said a bright color, not a gender reveal party color.ā ChloĆ© huffed.
āOkay, then a bright pink.ā
āThat works.ā
"And me?"
ChloĆ© stepped back dramatically, folding her arms as she inspected you from head to toe. āA dark blueāOoh! Maybe a turquoise?ā
You raised your eyebrows in satisfaction. āI could see that.ā
A squeal came from a distance. Looking over, you saw a boy and a girl tightly hugging each other, with a group of people surrounding them.
āWhatās going on over there?ā ChloĆ© whispered.
You shrugged. āNo clue.ā
āOf course Iāll go with you!ā You heard the smiling girl say.Ā
You frowned. āItāsā¦a proposal.ā
āTheyāre getting married?ā ChloĆ© asked.
Shaking your head, you laughed. āNo, ChloĆ©, a proposal for the Yule Ball.āĀ
āYou scared me for a second, Y/N. Thought I was falling behind already.ā
You burst out laughing. āOh, ChloĆ©. Something new with you every day.ā
ChloĆ© grinned, then it slowly faltered. āWho are we going toā¦go with?ā
For a moment, you looked away.
Who would we go with?Ā
"I'm sure it'll work itself out." You nudged her shoulder. "Some poor boy is bound to gather enough courage eventually."
ChloĆ© nodded, still concerned. āI hope that poor boy is hot.ā
Snickering, you both walked into the castle and headed for the library.Ā
The castle corridors glowed with warm candlelight. For once, the halls weren't filled with laughter or rushing footsteps. Just quiet.
Turning the corner, you bumped into someone.
A familiar someone.
āMerlin, do people watch where theyāre-ā The ginger boy muttered. His eyes met yours, and his face softened. āSorryāI didn't know it was you.āĀ
āNo, itās okay.ā
āWhatāre you doing here?ā
āWriting letters to our mums.ā You replied.Ā
āFor our dresses!ā ChloĆ© added excitedly.
Ron nodded along, dreamily looking at you; furrowing your brows, you tightened the strap of your bag on your shoulder.
āOhā¦for the Yule Ball?ā
āYes.ā You shifted uncomfortably on your feet. āWhat are youā¦doing?ā
āAvoiding someone,ā Ron mumbled.
āAh, I see.ā You smiled. āWell, weāre going toā¦go.ā
āYup. See youā¦around, Y/N.ā Ron crookedly smiled as you passed by. The library was in sight, the doors open and softly lit.
It was a simple step away.
One beat.
Thenā
āWait!ā A voice called out. You turned around and saw Ron jogging towards you.Ā
āYes?ā You raised an eyebrow.
āAre youāwait, I donāt want to sound weird,ā Ron looked at the ground. āDo you have an idea of who youāreā¦going with?ā
This caught you by surprise.
āTo the Yule Ball?ā You inquired.
ā...Yes.āĀ
ā...No. Not yet, at least.ā You tilted your head to the side. āWhy?ā
Ronās ears burned red. āFor no particular reasonā¦just⦠wondering.ā
You huffed a laugh. āOkay. See you later.ā Turning on your heel, you walked back into the quiet library with ChloĆ©.
She rubbed your shoulder, mumbling, āSo oblivious.ā
āHuh?ā You looked at her, confused.
āNothing.ā
ā
A week before the Yule Ball.
Your dress had come in, thanks to your gorgeous barn owl, Critter.
It was a dark turquoise dress with a black lace rim that accentuated your frame.
āMagnifique.ā ChloĆ© breathed, picking up the silky dress and admiring it.Ā
āYours is cuter.ā You rolled your eyes at her astonishment.
āThis?ā She waved her wand, floating a glittery neon pink dress. āThis is cuter?ā
āYou asked for something ābright,ā ChloĆ©.ā You snickered. āIt looks nice on you anyway.ā
She scoffed, swishing the highlighter of a dress away. āI canāt wait to see this dress on you, Y/N. Iāll do your hair, too!ā
You smiled. āLetās think about our dates before we think of hairstyles.ā
ChloĆ© frowned. āRight. A week away. Still no hot boy.ā
Smiling to yourself, you folded the dress and slid it beneath your bed before smoothing the wrinkles from your uniform. āShould we walk around Hogwarts?ā
āAnd see our options?ā
āWhat else would we do?ā
With a grin, ChloƩ linked her arm with yours. You both exited the Beauxbatons Carriage and entered the castle.
As you both walked in silence, you thought to yourself.
Four boys had already asked me. I rejected every single one of them.
Who am I waiting for?Ā
Why do I feelā¦
Incomplete?
The castle buzzed with excitement.
Nervous boys approached giggling groups of girls.
Tearful students walked away after being rejected.
ā¦Some were snogging.
You scowled as you saw a couple making out in one of the empty corridors.
āSo, whereāre we going to go first?ā ChloĆ© asked.Ā
You attempted to say her name. āHerm-own-ninnie.āĀ
āThe bushy-haired girl?ā
You nodded. āShe mustāve gotten a date already, no?ā
āWhat are you implying?ā
āSheās pretty.ā
āShe is.ā ChloĆ© went quiet for a momentāfor a bit too long.
You raised an eyebrow, questioning, āWhatāre you thinking about?āĀ
ā...Nothing.ā
āWhen you say nothing, youāre thinking about everything.ā You playfully nudged her arm. āWhat is it?ā
āDo you thinkā¦ā ChloĆ© started, then she shook her head. ā...Itās a crazy thought, Y/N.ā
āEven better. Tell it.ā
āMaybe Ron and Hermyā¦own-ninnieā¦are already going together.ā
Your steps faltered.
Your stomach twisted.
Ronās awkward smile flickered through your mind.
Goingā¦together?
Her and Ron
āY/Nā¦?ā ChloĆ© murmured.
You blinked, looking at her again.Ā
āWhat happened?ā ChloĆ© rubbed your shoulder, looking at you with a raised brow.Ā
You shook your head, forcing your feet to move. āI thought I forgot something.ā
Both of you wandered down a quiet, unfamiliar hallwayāthen heard voices.
āYou know he won't have the guts to do it, Harry.ā
āWell, heāll have to find a way.ā
Herm-own-ninnie and Harry Potter, you thought.Ā
āRonaldās a wussy when it comes to girls!ā Hermione said exasperatedly.Ā
āWhatāre they talking about?ā ChloĆ© whispered.
āMust be aboutā¦Ron.ā You mumbled. Taking a sharp turn, you avoided the two.Ā
āI thought we were going to talk to her-?ā
āNever mind.ā You scowled.Ā
āAre you okay, Y/N?ā
āYes. Letās find you a date-ā
āY/N! ChloĆ©!ā
Both of you turned around, facing Hermione and Harry jogging toward you.
ā...Hi,ā You said a little stiffly.
āHello,ā Hermione caught her breath. āFound anyone yet?ā
āNo.ā You bit the inside of your cheek, looking away from her face.Ā
āPerfect.ā Harry grinned. āTold you, āMione.ā
āYou havenāt got one either, Harry.ā Hermione scoffed.Ā
āOhā¦right.ā
āChloĆ©, have you got a date?ā Hermione chirped.
Your friend shook her head. āIāve been asked, but they're allā¦ugly.ā
Hermione stifled a laugh. āTell me about it.ā
āDo you have one?ā ChloĆ© asked.
āYes!ā The brunette girl beamed. āItāsā¦a secret, though.ā
Harry groaned. āShe wonāt budge. Tried to get her to say, but nothing.ā
A pause.
Your eyes widened in a sudden realization.
ā...A secretā¦ā
āā¦Tried to get her to say somethingā¦ā
Harry wouldāve known if Ron asked Hermioneā¦
That means Ron hasnāt asked her.
Your shoulders relaxed.
āA secret love story? How adorable!ā ChloĆ© gushed, breaking through your thoughts. Holding onto Hermioneās hands, ChloĆ© rambled, āIāve read hundreds of romance stories about stuff like thisāā
āRon doesnāt have a date yet, yeah?ā You asked Hermione. She froze, eyebrows raised.
āUm- no! Not yet. Weāve beenā¦trying to get him to get one.ā Hermione said quickly.Ā
Harry nodded along in agreement. āHe has an eye out for someone, though.ā
Hermione nudged himāa bit too hardāwhich caused Harry to grunt.Ā
āMione!ā
āYou, know, we have things to do, Harry!ā Hermione smiled hard, pulling Harryās arm. āWeāll see you two later!āĀ
You watched them as they walked down the corridor, quietly arguing.
Ron has an eye out for someone?
ā
You exited the peaceful library, your mind on one thing: going to the Owlery.
You promised your mum you would send her updates on how Hogwarts was.
āIt seems like all the students there have something to pawn about.ā Your mum had written, which made you laughābecause it was true.
You traced your thumb over the folded parchment in your hand.
Then, you heard someone say your name.
āY/N!ā
Ā Looking up, you saw Ron.
You simply waved, offering a smile. āHi.ā
āHi, Y/N.ā Ron awkwardly grinned. āThought youād be here.ā
Heat flushed to your face. āYou thought Iād be here?ā
āWell- I wasnāt stalking you orā¦anything.ā His voice got smaller. āI knew you liked going to the library.ā
āOh, yes.ā
āWriting another letter?ā Ron nodded to the parchment in between your fingers.
āYes. To my mumāsheās wondering what Hogwarts is like.ā You replied. āWant toā¦walk with me?ā
Ronās lips parted. āWha- Yes, of course!ā He cleared his throat. āSorryā¦that sounded overlyā¦excited.ā
You softly laughed and went on your way to the Owlery, Ron closely on your side.Ā
āSoā¦what did you write in your letter?ā Ron questioned, looking down at you. He was surely tallerāwhich was embarrassing for you.
āI said I liked the weather and the atmosphere. Very calmingā¦sometimes.ā You fiddled with the corner of the parchment. āAnd I saidā¦I liked the people here.ā
He raised an eyebrow. āThe people? Some of them areā¦well, snobbish.ā
You snickered. āI know. The Slytherinsāvery rude. But I wrote about Hermy-own-ninnie, Harry, andā¦you.ā
Ronās steps almost stopped. āMe?ā
āYes, you.ā
Ron stayed quiet for a second.Ā
āAre you alive?ā You joked, nudging his arm.
āY-Yeah. Iām breathing.ā
āIād hope so.ā Climbing up the spiraling steps, you recalled, āYou know, I used to call you Red in my head.ā
āRed?ā Ron huffed a laugh.
āYour hair. Itās red.ā
āThatāsā¦cute.ā
Your head snapped to look at him. āCute?ā
Ron almost choked on his spit. āNo- not like that- just-ā He sighed, running a hand down his face. āI wasnāt supposed to say that aloud.ā
You burst out in genuine laughter at his flustered state.Ā
āDonāt laugh, Iām already struggling.ā Ron groaned.Ā
You patted his shoulder. āYouāre very funny, Red. I laugh a lot when Iām with you.ā
āReally?ā
āYes.ā You smiled. Then, you looked around the area. āThe Owleryās around here, no?ā
āYeah. Follow me.ā
āBetter not be leading me to anywhere scary.ā
Ron snickered. āCanāt promise that.ā Walking down a busy corridor, Ron asked, āWhatās redhead in French?ā
āRoux.ā You answered. āGinger.ā
Ron replied with a short hum. He led you inside the Owlery, and you went to Critter.Ā
āHi, Critter.ā You said quietly, patting her head. You tied your letter to Critterās leg and whispered, āTo mum. Sheāll be home.ā
Your owl chirped, then flew off. You turned, facing Ron again, and walked out of the Owlery with him.
āSo, Roux,ā You started, wandering down the corridor. āWho are you going to the-ā
āExcuse me,ā A rough voice said. A tall boy unexpectedly stood in front of you, looking completely bored and uninterested.
ā...Hi?ā You raised an eyebrow.
āCan you be my date for the Yule Ball?ā The boy asked huskily.
You frowned; Ron stood up straighter, moving closer to your body.
Scowling, you replied sourly, āThatās not how you ask a girl out.ā
āHuh?ā
āYou donāt ask a girl out like this.āĀ
āWhy does it matter?ā He furrowed his brows.
āEffort matters.ā
Other students and passersby looked at both of you.
āDonāt embarrass me. I just need someone.ā
ā...Abruti.ā
āHuh?ā
āIdiot.ā You said, raising your voice. āIs that loud enough, or do you need me to write it down?āĀ
A group of girls giggled at the scene.
Walking past the dumbfounded boy with a scoff, Ron caught up to you.
āYou were glaring at him.ā You said quietly.
āHeāsā¦rude. Thatās all.ā
āI wasnāt going to say yes.āĀ
He looked at you with gentle eyes. āI know. You wouldnāt settle for a lame.ā
You laughed, smacking his shoulder. āOh, Red.ā
ā
-Ronās POV-
āDear Dad,Ā
Could you send me a Muggle cassette? Rock music, if you've got one.
It's for a girl. Sheās pretty cool, and I want to ask her to the Yule Ball.
Don't tell Mum.
-Ron.ā
After looking over it, he folded the parchment and sent it off with Pig.
āRon, whatāre you doing here?āĀ
He turned around, facing his little sister, Ginny, with Hermione.
āYou two. Hi.ā Ron scratched the nape of his neck. āSent a letter to Dad. Why?ā
āI dunno, maybe because there are like a dozen bouquets in the common room!ā Ginny hissed. āGet back in there before someoneās allergies start flaring up!ā
He ran a hand down his face. āI forgot about those.ā
āYou sent a letter to Mr. Weasley about what?ā Hermione asked, following Ginny and Ron down the corridors.
āFor a Muggle rock cassette. Y/N likes music.ā Ron replied. āNever mind that, I donāt know what to do with the flowers. Are there seriously that many?ā
āGinnyās exaggerating. I bet there arenāt that manyā¦ā Hermione trailed off as the three entered the Gryffindor common room.
Stacks of dark-colored bouquets were piled in the common room.Ā
āBloody hell.ā Ron groaned.Ā
āIs she a florist?ā Ginny snickered.Ā
āRon, she doesn't need twenty bouquets,ā Hermione huffed, face-palming.Ā
āWon-won! Whoāre these flowers for?ā George called out from a corner.Ā
āAre these all for me?ā Fred teased.
"Bit subtle, aren't you?" George joked, stifling a laugh. āCould use another dozen.ā
āOr two,ā Fred added.
āMaybe three?ā
āIām going to throw you both in the lake,ā Ron muttered.
āWe can use the flower petals to set up a proposal spot,ā Hermione offered. āIf theyāre too many, we can justā¦give them to couples!ā
āThen we use the rose thorns to poke Fred and George.ā Ginny grinned.
āHeard that!ā The twins said in a sing-song voice.
āGood plan, āMione. Iāll justā¦choose a good bouquet for now.ā Ron sifted through the twenty-something batches of glittery-dark blue roses.
After picking out a chunky batch, he looked to Ginny and Hermione for confirmation.
āPretty.ā
āLooks like moonlight.ā
āOkay. I just need the cassettes, then weāll be set, yeah?ā Ron held onto the bouquet tightly, securing them so the petals wouldnāt fall.
āYouāll be all set. Harry still needs a date.ā Hermione sighed. āMcGonagallās on his tail about it.ā
āSend him with ChloĆ©?ā Ginny suggested.Ā
Ron nodded. āThatāsā¦not too bad of an idea.ā
āMerlin, I hope Harry doesnāt mess that up.ā Hermione huffed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
Later that nightā¦
Ron,
Went to one of those Muggle shops.Ā
Picked out a few of themāI didnāt know which one that special girl would like.
Molly was pressing, but I kept my word.
Good luck, kiddo.
Love, Dad.
ā
-Y/Nās POV-
You had finished your daily reading session in the comfortable library. The winter air was sweet, yet cold.Ā
Slipping your thick book back into your bookbag, you headed down the empty hallways. The sun was setting, so the windows let in the honey-colored lighting.
āY/N!ā
You turned around and saw a nervous-looking Ron jogging towards you.
Grinning, you waved. āHi, Red.ā
Freezing, Ronās cheeks flushed a deep red at the name.
āHi.ā He took a deep breath, trying his hardest to maintain eye contact.
āWhatāsā¦going on?ā You asked, tilting your head.
āUm- oh, nothing. I justā¦wanted toā¦talk to you.ā Ron cleared his throat. āLibrary again, huh?āĀ
You continued your stroll. āMhm. Iām almost done with my book.ā
āWhatās your book about?ā
āMusic.ā
āOh, rightā¦You love music; canāt forget.ā Ron mumbled. āHowāsā¦Critter?ā
You raised an eyebrow. āCritterāsā¦alright.āĀ
āSorry- I didnāt mean to ask that.ā Ron scratched his head. āCan weā¦walk outside?ā
āOutside?ā
āYeah. N-nice weather.ā
ā...Okay, sure.ā
Exiting the castle, the green grass waved in melody with the gushing wind. Clouds scattered the yellow-blue sky.Ā
Ron suddenly stopped walking, and you did too.Ā
āRed, whatāsā¦going on?ā
āUmā¦Y/N,ā Ron started, his body slightly trembling from nervousness. āI know you love rock musicā¦music in general- I donāt know if you liked the instruments or the actual music-ā
āRed.ā
āYeah?ā Ron looked at you.
āYouāre rambling.ā You giggled.
āI-I know. Sorry.ā He cleared his throat again. āI got you these.ā Sticking his hand out, he held a stack of cassette tapes, tied together with a blue ribbon.
āRed!ā You squealed, taking the cassette tapes and admiring them. āOh my goodness, Red, this is amazing!ā
āDad wasn't sure what counted as rock.ā
You laughed, then hugged him.
A soft, gentle hug that proved your appreciation more than your words ever could.
āThank you, Ron. So much.ā
Ron completely froze.
Then, awkwardly, he hugged you back.
Letting go of his body, you saw Ron blush, massaging the nape of his neck.
āYouāre welcome. Itāsā¦nothing.ā Glancing behind him, he murmured, āThereās more.ā
āMore? What else is there?ā
āTake a look.ā
You both walked to a small garden, surrounded by green shrubs, and there you saw itā
Flower petals shaping an embarrassingly big heart.
You burst out laughing. āOh my goodness, Red, this is hilarious.ā
He turned a shade of magenta. āThe flowers werenāt my ideaā¦at least the heart of flowers.āĀ
āI really love the colors; it matches my Yule Ball dressā¦ā You trailed off, then your eyes went wide.
The Yule Ball.
Your eyes drifted from the flowers...
...to the cassette tapes in your hands.
...to Ron.
Oh.
This wasn't just a giftā¦
This was aā¦
āY/Nā¦ā Ron said quietly, silencing your train of thought.
You slowly faced him, lips parted.
āI remembered what you said,ā He started, looking down at the grass. āAbout effort.ā
You felt your heartbeat in your throat.
Why were your palms so sweaty?
āWill youā¦ā He winced, then recollected himself. āWill youā¦be my date to the Yule Ball?ā
Your heart dropped at the words; it was like your legs turned into jelly.
Butterflies filled your stomach as a small smile grew on your lips.
"...It's alright if you've already got someone-ā
āOf course Iāll be your date!ā You beamed, embracing him again.Ā
āWha-?ā
āYes, Red, Iāll be your date,ā You giggled, parting from his body.
Ron stared at you. "...Really?"
"Really."
A grin slowly spread across Ronās face. "Blimey."
"What?"Ā
"I thought I was going to throw up."
You burst into laughter. "You looked like you might."
He nodded to behind you. āSoā¦honest thoughts on the flower heartā¦thing?ā
āStill hilarious to me.ā
āFred and George.ā
āYeah. Figured.ā
As the two of you walked back toward the castle, the cassette tapes rested safely in your arms.
The Yule Ball was still a long, treacherous week away.
Somehow, you had a feeling in your chest that it would be your favorite night of the year.
