• At first Dave pretends it doesn’t faze him at all. If you casually drop into another language mid-sentence he’ll just stand there and try to process what you say, using only context clues.

• Given context there’s words he can easily pick up on. Mostly insults or pet names if you’re one to throw those around. He might call you these words back even if he doesn’t know what they mean, just cause it’s funny.

• If you speak a faster language, he’ll have a harder time understanding you. Words would be picked up less in that case.

• He finds it attractive if you have an accent from the language. You have something he doesn’t (or at least i don’t imagine him having an accent of his own, maybe a slight southern accent considering where he grew up.). Because you have that, he thinks you’re cooler than him, and that makes his heart beat erratically.

• He’d love to genuinely learn your language! He’d play it off as ironic. Learning a language is hard, but for Dave’s case it’ll be ten times harder, since he’ll either get off topic or start questioning everything about the language.

• He’ll try to mimic the sound of words you say, and end up butchering them hilariously.

• When you teach him, he seems to remember the dumb ones easier. Instead of simply “Hello” he’ll instead remember “your mom” or sm.

• Calling him an endearing name in a different language would make him go quiet. He doesn’t need to understand completely, your tone of voice and just hearing it from you is enough.

Dirk Strider…

• Unlike Dave, Dirk actively learns and puts in the practice to do it. If you say a word he doesn’t recognize, he immediately stops you and asks you to explain it.

• Sometimes he assumes the worst, but most of the time it’s just a generic word.

• Normally he wouldn’t care to learn it, but seeing as you’re in his life, it gives him a reason to pick a language up to the rest of his intellect.

• He loves code-switching banter. If you flip between languages mid-sentence, he’ll try to keep up, sometimes deliberately mixing English with whatever words he’s picked up from you just to flex.

• If one of your languages is rarer/less common, he finds that fucking awesome. It makes him feel like he’s in on some kind of secret when you teach him words like that one meme

• He might use your voice for a project. He likes hearing your voice.

• When you swear in your language, he’ll throw another right back at you in said language. I think he’d be another to remember swears and dumb shit more than regular words

• He’s hard on pronunciation. You can correct him once, and he’ll drill it in his head until it’s perfect.

• He likes the idea of having a secret language between the two of you. He uses it not when talking shit to you, or inside jokes.

• Dirk is a fast learner and will easily learn a language just to get closer to you.

Bro Strider…

• I’ll keep this one relatively short, since as I mentioned Bro is just an alternative universe of Dirk. Nonetheless, I feel Dirk and Bro are two different characters in my mind. Though only thing they have in common really is their interests and kick ass shades, as far as I could really see. Still, Bro feels so different from his counterpart that this feels right.

• Bro has some pretty laid back irony. If you were to switch up mid-sentence in a conversation, he kinda just stops and looks at you. Were you trying to prank him? Why’d you switch up?

• He treats it like an unexpected weapon in your arsenal. If you speak the language fluently and flawlessly, he’d overall think that’s really cool.

• If it’s a popular language that he’d know a little bit of, he might want to learn more. Though if it’s something more niche unfortunately I think he’d give less of a good shit.

• He doesn’t always ask you to translate, he’ll just try to figure it out for himself. I think it’s easier for him to learn that way.

• If he does want to learn one, it’s for goofy shit. For example, he’d ask how to say “yo mama” or “you suck” and then use it all the time from then on.

• If you make an effort to constantly teach him, eventually he’ll learn, just because he’s heard you say certain words a lot.

• I’d say after a few months of pretending he doesn’t know anything, he’d suddenly be able to speak a full sentence in that language.
