People will complain that popular pairings or popular characters from fandoms don’t feature characters from a certain gender/age bracket/race/specific personality or trait type. Yet, it’s the creators of the show/book/media that make the characters, not the fandom.
Which pairing or character becomes popular is often the result of how they were presented in the show, by the creator(s). The fans just get drawn to certain dynamics or personality types and start being obsessed with them.
If I find a (for example) female character boring or dislike her, well she’s boring and disliked, I don’t want to read fanfiction about her or see fanart of her. I don’t care. You can’t force me to like that character. And unless I am payed I wouldn’t want to waste my time drawing or writing about them. Not my fault a character was made as interesting or engaging as an almond.
Certain personality types, backstories or dynamics just draw in more attention than others by fandoms, which are mostly populated by a very specific subset of people. If you ask 100 Tumblr users vs 100 random people on the street which is their favorite pairing from the same very popular show (say Star Wars), you would see the majority of answers would differ between the two groups.
I hate Jegulus too. It goes against the novel imo, it doesn’t make any sense. And I know that it doesn’t have to be canon, it’s just a little too random for me.
Another thing I don’t like is when people have to make platonic friendships romantic. A few weeks ago, I came about an interesting analysis on here as to why people tend to do that and they used Wolfstar as an example. One of the points they brought up, was how this happens a lot with male characters. To them, Sirius and Remus always read as good friends. But just friends, nothing more than that. And they argued that there doesn’t need to be more, but because male friendships are pictured differently than female friendships. And caring about one another (even just platonically) is a ‘big display of emotions’ which is something that isn’t really encouraged or seen in male friendships dynamics, people tend to take that as something deeper. That there must be something else at play. They also said that they’re aware a lot of people just ship for fun and don’t take it to seriously, as in not trying to push the ship as canon. There are a lot of people who actively go against the novel, trying to push Wolfstar as canon and interpreting their signs of friendships as love or crushes. As in “they have to be in love with one another, otherwise they wouldn’t care this deeply”. Which is interesting because it says a lot about said person’s mentality. And how toxic they can be to prove their point. I’m curious on your opinion on Wolfstar or other ships you (dis)like.
That's an interesting analysis. I've never read a huge amount into it myself, I've just been plain baffled as to how so many people manage to think that they'd make anything resembling a good couple. I have a a hard time imagining them as anything other than hating each other, considering they do have a pretty solid reason to hate each other. But that's my opinion, ultimately, and the joy of fanfic and fandom is that we have the freedom to like whatever we want.
In terms of other ships that I actively dislike, honestly there aren't many. I dislike the overabundance of Hermione being paired with absolutely anyone for no reason (Hermione/teacher fanfics are an ick) but otherwise I don't think I'm involved enough in other pairings to have any active dislikes. Wolfstar isn't a solid like of mine but it can work sometimes, when the characters are written properly, that is.
