I absolutely do not mind sharing my headcanons about Mako and Bolin! In no particular order:
Mako tried for as long as possible not to get Bolin involved in pick-pocketing, theft, and the like.
The first time Bolin stole anything, it was food and hot tea for Mako. It had been a very cold night on the cusp of winter, and Mako had utterly exhausted himself staying awake all night to keep a flame alight in his hand so Bolin wouldn’t freeze in his sleep. Mako could barely keep his eyes open—they’d gone without food for days. Bolin stole for him.
In the early days, before they got good at living on the street, they sold what little they had for money (and got scammed because they were little kids with no concept of what anything was worth). Once, desperate, Mako took coins out of a fountain.
Mako has trouble falling asleep; Bolin can sleep almost anywhere.
Before Bolin could read, Mako would take him to the public library and, dwarfed by the stacks of books, he’d read to him. This is primarily how Bolin learned to read.
This was, of course, on the rare days they could afford to not be begging or stealing.
Or when it was too cold to risk being outside without adequate coats
Mako had horrible nightmares for a long time after seeing the murder.
There was a kindly baker who would leave leftover steamed buns on his back doorstep for the street kids—Mako and Bolin got their food from him whenever they could make it to his bakery before the other kids.
Sometimes Bolin would wander off and explore streets, and by the time he and Mako moved into the attic in the gym, he had a map of the entire city in his head.
I think I’ve said this somewhere else before, but: the Triple Threat Triad would make Mako and Bolin handle money for them, and so taught them math. Mako and Bolin are both really good at math for this reason.
While Mako was taught lightningbending for his early prowess with fire, Bolin was taught street Pai Sho because Shady Shin saw his potential as a hustler; Bolin had (and has) natural earnest charisma as well as a competitive streak.
When Bolin told Asami he was “pretty good,” at Pai Sho, he wasn’t lying. Bolin is one of the best street Pai Sho players out there.
Mako and Bolin got involved with the Triple Threats specifically because of the bending/race specifications of other gangs.
I think a lot about the couch in Mako and Bolin’s attic living space in the gym. It’s a big couch—how did it get up there!?
I imagine Mako and Bolin as scrawny teenagers struggling to get the pieces of a couch up the steep stairs to their new living space. They’re laughing and also getting snippy at each other, but they’re generally just excited to be getting furniture.

When Mako first joined the Republic City Police, you were the Captain he was assigned to. He was fresh out of the Academy, barely had any experience being a cop, and he was thrown to you by Chief Beifong.
"He's around your age, and you're both fire benders. Show him the ropes, Captain [Y/n]."
You couldn't have been more unimpressed.
"Being friends with the Avatar won't get you anywhere with me."
"Didn't think it would, but thanks for the heads up."
Seeing how brazen and unaffected you acted around him, Mako knew he had to step up his game in a major way if he was going to earn your respect. Despite being shorter and, as he'd learn later, three months his junior, the fire bender was desperate to show you he could be just as good a cop as anyone.
Most of the time, his extra effort went unnoticed by you. It didn't matter how many thieves or trespassers he caught. You'd merely review his report, nod once, and then pass it back to him without another word.
"I think she hates me, Bolin."
"Nooo, I don't think she hates you, Mako. Hate's an awfully strong word..."
Mako ran his hands over his face, heaving a loud sigh.
"Why doesn't she like me? I mean, what have I done to piss her off sooo badly?"
At that, Bolin giggled and poked his brother in the side.
"Why do you care so much, huuuh? Why does she have to like you?"
"Because she's my Captain? I see her every day? And..."
"...Aaand?"
Mako shoved his brother away, only adding fuel to the fire.
"Mako's gotta cruuush! Mako's gotta--Ouch, hey! Don't use fire in the house!"
He might've been annoyed at his little brother's teasing, but deep down, Mako knew he was right. He wanted your respect and admiration as his Captain, of course, but he also wanted to know you. The real you. The one you never let anyone else see.
To accomplish his secret goal, Mako went on countless raids and missions with you, participated eagerly in stakeouts and undercover operations. Most of the time, these ops were just you and him. Over the few months he was under your wing, the two of you got to know each other a lot better.
Eventually, Mako realized that your standoffish behavior and aloof attitude was just because you'd gotten so tired of men in the RCPD acting one of two ways: they either saw you as a little girl incapable of being a Captain, or they were downright creepy and sexist.
"That, and I have a terribly dark sense of humor that gets me in trouble a lot."
At that, Mako merely laughed.
"Didn't mean to be so hard on you, newbie. And fire bender to fire bender, you're doing really good. I'm glad I didn't scare you off."
"I can be just as difficult, so no worries, Captain [Y/l/n]."
You turned and gave him a small smile.
"Call me [Y/f/n]."
Tahno
It drove Tahno absolutely mad that you couldn't care less about him. Not only wouldn't you buy into his showmanship or admire him for his bending abilities, you wouldn't even give him the time of day.
Tahno never had to deal with that before meeting you. He's not used to people being so aloof around him, especially those from the Fire Nation. He took great pride in getting a reaction out of everyone. Love or hate, it didn't matter to him.
When you first met, you merely rolled your eyes at his extravagance and arrogance. You'd seen a million guys like him, so this behavior wasn't new. However, it still made you shake your head and scoff to yourself.
Despite being the fire bender on an opposing pro-bending team, Tahno took a liking to you. Despite your brash comments and constantly rejecting his interactions, he still made it his personal mission to get you to go on a date with him. He told you as much before one of your pro-bending matches.
To which you responded, "Yeah right!"
"Well, then, should we make a bet, sweetheart? If we win, you go on a date with me."
You crossed your arms and cocked an eyebrow.
"And if my team and I win?"
