The Firebender Paid the Price, the Earthbender Got a Pass: 14 Years of Mako vs. Bolin Double Standards
We need to discuss this in the name of spirits and humanity. Look me in the eyes, Legend of Korra fandom, because we need to talk about the stupid, unjustified, and deeply hypocritical double standards between the two iconic bending brothers. Yes, we are talking about Bolin and Mako.
It has been 14 years since 2012, and I am officially tired of the performative narratives. Itâs time to unpack why Bolin is coddled, overheated, and worshipped for breathing, while Mako is overly criticized, dismissed, slut-shamed, and reduced to a brainless "hot love interest." Letâs get into the logic, the canonical facts, and the absolute mess that is character bias.
đ¨ Exhibit A: The "Cheater" vs. The Fascist Sympathizer
Letâs look at their canonical mistakes. Makoâs biggest crime? He was an emotionally clumsy, stressed-out 18-year-old street orphan who got caught in an awkward teenage love triangle with Korra and Asami. He handled it poorly. He lied by omission. He was messy.
But the fandom reacted as if he personally invented infidelity, branding him a toxic "cheater" for over a decade.
Meanwhile, what was Bolin doing?
⢠He literally joined a fascist military regime under Kuvira.
⢠He helped run re-education camps.
⢠He actively contributed to a dictatorship because he was blinded by fame, a shiny uniform, and a desire to help people.
And how did the fandom react? "Oh, poor baby, heâs just naive! He didn't know any better! Look at his cute little face!"
The double standard is staggering. Mako is condemned eternally for teenage relationship drama, while Bolin is instantly forgiven for political warfare because he performs a goofy, safe, non-threatening brand of masculinity.
đ The Toxic Worship of Theatrical Masculinity
Why does Bolin get a pass? Because he embodies theatrical masculinity. He is the funny guy, the actor, the mover star, the golden retriever. Fandoms worship this trope because it requires zero emotional heavy lifting from the audience. He makes us laugh, so his flaws are invisible.
Mako, on the other hand, performs protective, hyper-responsible masculinity. He is serious, rigid, and cautious. Why? Because he had to watch his parents get murdered in front of him at eight years old and raise his younger brother on the streets of Republic City!
Mako didnât have the luxury of being a carefree golden retriever. He had to be the guard dog. Yet, the fandom punishes him for his trauma, calling him "boring" or claiming he "has no personality." His personality is survival, responsibility, and loyalty.
đ The Subconscious Misogyny of Slut-Shaming Mako
The sheer amount of cruel, unwanted hate Mako has received since 2012 is laced with a bizarre, performative misogyny. He is treated like a prize object whose only worth was being "the hot one."
When Korra and Asami ultimately ended up together (canonically iconic, we love to see it), the fandom weaponized it to humiliate Mako. They reduced his entire character arc to "the ex-boyfriend they both rejected." They stripped away his heroism, his detective work, his sacrifice in the spirit mech, and his deep, enduring friendships with both women.
Mako was a broke kid who worked himself to the bone so his brother could eat. He grew into a dedicated detective and a loyal ally who literally risked his life to redirect lightning in the heart of a spirit weapon. He is not a stepping stone. He is not a punchline.
In Conclusion, Bolin is great, but stop using his goofy demeanor to shield him from accountability while you use Makoâs trauma-induced seriousness as a weapon against him. Mako deserved grace he never got. Stop treating relationship mistakes like war crimes, and stop treating war crimes like oopsie-daisies.
Drop your thoughts in the reblogs. Are we ready to admit the fandom bias yet, or are we still pretending Mako isn't one of the most fiercely loyal characters in the entire franchise?

Warning(s)- I forgot what happened in TLOK and now I'm trying to write about it⌠and spun a wheel because I couldnât decide on the plotâŚ. Also I went over this (I think?) but there are still probably some mistakes. If ooc let me know, pls. Death, crying?
#############################
She sighed as she continued to shuffle through her studentsâ papers. âCute.â her boyfriend said looking down at the work in front of her, it was a drawing one of her students had made of the Avatar. âYeah, they were supposed to draw their hero. Here, this one is you.â She chuckled, handing him the paper as he stared at it in disbelief. He chuckled, âShe got my scarf, very good attention to detailâŚâ Mako said the drawing was obviously done by a 6-year-old but it was still pretty good. (Name) volunteered at a school from time to time. âYou finished packing yet?â He asked, noticing her two suitcases by the door and one still half full.
âAlmost done, I just need to grab some other things but I'll be done by the time my father arrives.â She said she was going back to the fire nation for 3 months for her sister's wedding. She was sad to leave Mako for so long but she was also very excited for the wedding. A few hours had passed and her father had arrived to take her home. âJust be carefulâŚâ She whispered as she hugged Mako tightly. They said their goodbyes and they didn't see each other again until after Kuvira's attack.
Now here she was in his kitchen. He opened the door to find that she had stress cleaned⌠again. He sighed, sure he didnât mind having a clean apartment, but seeing her like this hurt a lot more. She had moved into his apartment after the attack because her apartment building was destroyed in the chaos. âHey, beautifulâŚâ He said soothingly as she continued to thoroughly and aggressively wash the dishes. âHello.â She muttered holding a plate up before continuing to scrub it. âPandaâŚâ He called her affectedly, it was a nickname she had gained as a child which her older sister had been overly happy to tell Mako. Her stoic face cracked into a smile at the name then quickly faded, âYou almost died⌠and I wasnât hereâŚâ She mumbled before he could ask her what was wrong. She dried her hands off then hugged him, âI didnât want you hereâŚIt was better that you were safe in the fire nation with your family.â He replied, returning her hug tightly. âI love you so muchâŚâ He whispered, he had made up his mind, this was the woman he would marry someday. Better yet, today. âSo, I was thinking⌠you have that pretty white dress and I have my work uniformâŚâ Mako said relenting her from their hug, she nodded trying to figure out where he was going with this. âYou moved in here a month ago, you made Bolinâs old room your own and you added your own spin to the apartment⌠You made my house feel like home again is what I'm sayingâŚâ Mako said, romantic speeches were not his thing. He held her hands as she waited for the rest of his speech, âI would like it if you donât move back out after your apartment is fixed.â He said, she didnât like where this speech was going, she would have never moved in with him if not for the attack.
âMako⌠you know I donâtââ She started but he shook his head. âI know. Thatâs why I think we should get married. Today, if you're up for it.â He whispered as she stood in shock. âSeriously?â She asked, she loved him and she wanted to say yes but she couldnât help but have her doubts. âSeriously.â Mako confirmed.
Now they sat in a young judge's office, âYou owe me.â Mako said as the judge sighed. âThatâs one way to greet an old friendâŚâ The man replied, sounding fatigued and offended. (Name) chuckling at their interaction, the man got up to grab the paper work from outside of his office and told them that he would be back soon. They had gone when the office was getting ready to close. âYou really think we should do this, because we cried about you almost dying?â She asked. âI think we should do this because you are a smart and caring person. What happened today only pushed me to ask youâ And you cried.â Mako said, (Name) laughed at his response. The man walked back into the room, and the young coupleâs conversation ended. âSo, letâs get you two married.â The man said, flipping through some paper work. The time flew by, the couple now stood hand and hand, âI do.â (Name) whispered. âI now pronounce Mr. and Mrs. Mako is a jerk. Now get out.â The man said, as the young couple kissed, âI said out. Not kiss. Go.â He shooed them. She held Mako's hand as they walked home, she wondered if she would regret marrying him which was her first sign that she didnât leave unnoticed. (Name)âs doubts were soon silent as the days went on and he was proving more and more that they had actually made a good decision.
Those days turned into months and the city was being rebuilt nicely with new inventions all over. Their marriage was okay but they argued more and more, soon her doubts were resurfacing. When she found out the news that they were expecting, they had gotten into a bad fight the day before and were currently not on speaking terms. âYou're being childishââ Mako complained as she slammed the door in his face, she sat down on their bed, what were they even fighting over? She couldnât remember, but he hurt her and she hurt him. The phone rang, she picked it up unaware that Mako had done the same in the front room. It was her doctorâs office calling to remind her of the appointment for her regarding her pregnancy, there was a thud in the other room. She chose to ignore the sound and hung up the phone before rolling over in bed, then there were more thuds as if something kept falling. (Name) heard the thud get closer and closer until there was rapid knocking on the door, she put a pillow over her head and tried to fall asleep. She huffed not being able to get and sleep with the knocking so she got up to open the door. âWhat is so important?!â She yelled while opening the door, she froze seeing the look on her husbandâs face before he fell again, âMAKO!â she shouted.
Mako woke up to the scent of flowers which he quickly concluded that it was his wife, he turned his head to see (Name) sitting beside him on the floor. He didnât know how long he had been out for but that didn't matter because she was crying. âI'm sorry about not telling you sooner and I'm sorry about our fight⌠I was in the wrong and I acted childish after. I should have talked it out.â She whispered softly as he sat up and rubbed his head. âI'm sorry you felt the need to fight about it. AgainâŚâ He said referring to how he had separated (Name) from all the rest of his friends and family. (Name) didn't take too kindly to the fact he still hadn't told them about her after being married for almost 3 months. She hugged him tightly, as he remembered what had happened for him to hit his head. âIm gonna be a dadâŚâ He whispered, she chuckled as she let him go. âYeahâŚyou areâŚâ She whispered, rubbing his face gently, he put his hands over hers. He held her close as he realized the amount of people he still had to introduce her too.
The next day, she was making breakfast, and Mako walked up behind her to hug her. It was a normal morning, they talked and laughed. They went off to work, and he continued his day like normal. He was in Linâs office discussing his most recent cases when someone walked in to tell Mako that a hospital was on the phone. âSoâŚwhen were you going to tell us about your wife?â Lin asked Mako as they sat in the waiting room of the hospital. He sat nervously waiting, he didnât know what could have happened or why it happened. âKid. Sheâll be okay.â Lin said, he nodded as his leg shook up and down anxiously. It felt like years before they were allowed to go and see (Name). âNon-gestational ovarian choriocarcinomaâŚâ She whispered, staring at a wall. âWhatâ What is that?â Mako asked as tears slowly slid down her face. âCancer.â She whispered, he was sitting on the side of her bed. She had passed out during work, so she was brought to the hospital and after further testing they found out she was not pregnant. âThe surgery is in a few days then I start chemoâŚâ (Name) mumbled as she started to sob. He tried to reach out for her, but he couldn't seem to move. Lin waited outside, trying to ignore the sobs that ceased after a while.
âHey, kidâŚâ Lin mumbled as Mako closed the door behind him. âShe'sâŚuh⌠sleeping.â Mako muttered, he was out of it, Lin noted. âKid, maybe take the day offâŚâ Lin suggested, he shook his head no. âHer treatment is probably going to be expensiveâŚâ He whispered, he got through the day but it passed by in a blink. âHeyâŚâ He mumbled, walking into her hospital room and closing the door. She made eye contact with him, before she sat up a bit. âHiâŚâ (Name) mumbled, as he walked over and hugged her. âWe are gonna get through this.â He whispered for them both. âYeah..â She whispered back, holding him tighter.
Her surgery went smoothly as well as her first round of chemo, âYou look amazingâ Mako said as she looked at her shaved head. âIt'll grow back⌠what do you think?â He said gently, she had been crying when she realized she would need to shave her head. âI think I have a really nice head shape, huh.â She mumbled, causing them both to laugh. âIt looks great, thank you.â She said getting up to hug him despite the hair all over her. Mako hugged her tightly, he didnât want the moment to end, but it did. The next few months went by smoothly. She was getting more tired as the days went on but they said that was normal due to the chemo.
âMako, my chest hurtsâŚâ she whispered, rubbing her chest, Mako sat on the bed beside her. It was 10 o'clock at night, Mako had just worked a late shift and had gotten back home to find his wife struggling to breathe. She coughed, hard. And she continued all the way until they got to the hospital. She struggled to breathe and the coughing was not helping, Mako didnât know what to do or how to help her, so he held her hand until they were separated so she could be treated.
She huffed.
(Name) watched Mako slowly fade away as she was pushed away in a wheelchair.
She huffed.
(Name) watched while the nurses rushed around her.
She huffed.
(Name) watched as the doctor and nurses whispered about her condition.
She huffed. She huffed. She huffed.
She stopped huffing.
âWhatâŚâ Mako whispered, his voice cracked. âHey bro⌠you okay?â Bolin asked, putting his hand on his brother's shoulder. âYeah- uh⌠noâŚâ Mako admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. âIt's just that⌠it's been almost a year since (Name) died⌠and I justââ Mako said his brother nodded sitting down on the coach near his brother. Bolin handed Mako the picture of (Name) that he had picked up, âI wish I met her.â Bolin said as Mako stared at her picture and agreed with his brother. âHow did sheâŚ?â Bolin asked because he had only attended the funeral and was too scared to ask then. âCancer. It was aggressive and spread to her lungs⌠we didnât know that the chemo had stopped working⌠She kept saying that she was tired and that it was hard to breathe. But they said that can be normal for the type of cancer she had and it would go away when she had finished chemo.â Mako said hold back whatever tears he had left in him. âShe was so happy when she thought she was pregnant, she nicknamed the baby lightning bug because she thought they would have been a fire bender.â Mako said the tears were finally winning and sliding down his face.

Two Sides of the Same Coin: How the Fandom Punishes Asami and Mako for Surviving Their Trauma
đ¨ UNPOPULAR OPINION (BUT I HAVE MEDIA LITERACY) đ¨
Ladies, gentlemen, and esteemed guests of the dashboard, pull up a chair, pour some cups of Uncle Iroh's calming jasmine tea, and letâs talk about the absolute chokehold that surface-level reading has on the Legend of Korra fandom.
We need to talk about the sheer, unadulterated hypocrisy of how y'all treat Asami Sato and Mako. Because after fourteen years of watching this discourse spin in circles since 2012, I have finally cracked the code:
Asami and Mako are two halves of the exact same structural coin. They are the hyper-independent, parentified survivalists of Team Avatar. And the fandom has been ruthlessly punishing them for over a decade because they had the audacity to process their horrific trauma quietly.
Meanwhile? The collective dash will write a 45-page thesis defending literal warlords, eco-terrorists, gaslighters, and sociopaths just because they have an edgy color palette and "pretty privilege." (And newsflash: being objectified into a flat aesthetic isn't a privilege, but we'll get there).
Letâs unpack the double standards, because the math is not mathing.
𧾠1. The Anatomy of the Coin: Parentification & Hyper-Independence
Letâs look at the facts. Both Mako and Asami lost mothers to Fire Nation criminals. Both grew up entirely too fast. Both became the "adults" of their respective situations because the actual adults in their lives either died or turned into cyber-terrorists.
But because they don't wear their trauma like a hot topic fashion accessory, y'all call them "boring."
đ Side A: Asami Sato (The Hyper-Feminine Repressor)
Asamiâs entire coping mechanism is pristine composure, elegance, and utility. Her mother was murdered. Her father literally tried to liquidate her friends and joined an extremist cult. Her family company faced total bankruptcy.
And how does Asami handle it? She fixes the planes. She drives the satomobiles. She pays for the team's entire lives. She maintains her grace.
And what does the fandom do? They look at her flawless red lipstick and say, "Oh, sheâs just an aesthetic. Sheâs just the rich girlfriend." Y'all require her to be this unbreakable, flawless emotional mattress for everyone else, and the second she doesn't have a screaming, destructive meltdown, you claim she has "no depth." You are punishing her for her resilience.
𧣠Side B: Mako (The Hyper-Masculine Protector)
Mako grew up in a literal orphanage and raised his younger brother on the streets of Republic City while running errands for the Triple Threats just so they wouldn't starve. He learned at eight years old that showing vulnerability gets you killed. He is stiff, guarded, and has the emotional vocabulary of a brick wall because survival doesn't leave room for poetry.
He was an awkward, out-of-his-depth teenager who handled a messy love triangle poorly in Season 1. Thatâs it. Thatâs his grand crime.
Yet for 14 YEARS, he has been dragged as this "toxic, abusive villain." Y'all completely ignore that this boy has a massive heart underneath. He joined the police force to clean up the streets that chewed him up. He was literally ready to lay down his life and die inside a spirit mech core in Season 4 finale to save the world. But you still talk about him like heâs just "the cheating ex."
Both Asami and Mako process pain through labor and protection. They don't complain; they just get to work. And the fandom calls them boring because their pain isn't entertaining enough for you.
đ¤ 2. The Villain Pass & The Myth of "Pretty Privilege"
Now letâs look at the absolute clownery of who this fandom does forgive.
Amon: A literal cult leader who forcibly strips people of their bending identity. Fandom: "Tragic king! His voice is so deep!"
Zaheer: An extremist who suffocates an elderly queen on screen and injects metallic poison into an 18-year-old girl. Fandom: "An intellectual icon! Let go your earthly tether!"
Kuvira: A military dictator running literal reeducation camps. Fandom: "Step on me, mommy protector, she just wanted order!"
Why do the fictional sadists, sociopaths, and psychopaths get a pass? Because their trauma is theatrical, loud, and edgy. The fandom loves performative depth. If a character destroys a city because they are sad, you call it "nuance." If a character quietly goes to an office to rebuild her family's ruined legacy (Asami) or sacrifices his youth to keep his brother alive (Mako), you call it "flop behavior."
And let's kill the myth of "pretty privilege" in media analysis right now. In the real world, being hot opens doors. In fiction? Conventional beauty is a cage that erases substance.
Because Mako and Asami are exceptionally attractive, lazy viewers stop looking at their actual writing. They assume the appearance is the characterization. Asami gets reduced to "waifu bait," erasing her literal mechanical genius and flawless combat record. Mako gets reduced to "the brooding hunk," erasing his profound loyalty and grit.
They are three-dimensional characters with heart, soul, personality, and devastating internal battles. Stop treating them like trophies just because you don't know how to read text that isn't shouted at you.
End of discussion. Go look at a mirror and think about your choices.
I need more Mako fics he's my man since I was 9 and he's so overhated I wish we had more than just crumbs for him đŤ
Dw anonymous, there will be more content for all my Mako freaks out theređŁ I'm currently working on one right now it's moving slow because erm.. school đđđ BUT I'll be sure to post it immediately once it's done đ
