Mai sighs, “Since when are we honest with each other?”

Suki drops her gaze, fingers tightening over Mai’s knee and some part of her longs for her to move her hand up just a little. To glide up her leg and trace the inside of her thigh. She wants her to touch her without any layers too.

Looking down at the other woman in this context has her considering how simple it could be to cross the line.

“What do you want me to be honest about?” Suki asks, her voice quieter now. Speaking as though there were others in the room, as though someone could hear her. Maybe if she spoke any louder someone would. Maybe Ty Lee would.

Mai doesn’t actually have an answer to that so she doesn’t try to offer one, instead saying, “I’m tired.”

Suki looks up at her again, eyes narrowed in consideration. The pause is long and Suki looks as though she has to build courage to ask, “Will Zuko be joining you this evening?”

Mai rolls her eyes, gaze landing on the wall beyond Suki’s head, “That would be unlikely.”

Suki hums, “Then please,” she starts, hand finally shifting up to trace her thigh, her other reaching up to tilt Mai’s chin towards her, “allow me to be here with you in his stead.”

Her breath stops in her lungs and her mouth dries at the prospect. The idea of it, of Suki rising up to press their lips together, to keep pushing until Mai gives and takes and pulls, it pools in molten desire in her gut.

She wants.

Mai gives Suki a set of her knives - not just newly-bought blades, but blades she's had for a long time, out of her personal collection, that she's used, embellished, toyed with, and repaired over the years, things she's set part of her heart into.

And for Suki, it's the day she gives Mai a set of green robes, brown armor plating, a face painting kit, and a set of fans, and tells her that she's earned them back, and earned them back a long time ago. Mai is probably more surprised than anyone, considering she had stolen the uniform before, but she can read between the lines and see what Suki is really saying.

Mai pulls away, rinsing the cloth out one more time before draping it over the side of the water bucket. She looks Suki up and down. “What happened?” Suki sighs. She hates this part. She knows Mai only asks because she’s worried for her, but Suki doesn’t like reliving her narrow escapes like this. It’s easier when she’s regaling tales of glory to a tavern full of strangers. It’s much harder when she has to admit near defeat to the person she will miss most when the end finally does come.
