Design Notes:
Holly-I wanted to embrace Holly being a little more simple, and based her dress on high-class regency era gowns; loose fitting, and deliberately plain. With flats, no makeup and no jewellery.
It’s canon that Holly has been homeschooled her whole life, trapped in her castle. Apparently in the books this has left her socially inept, and deeply co-dependant on her sister, but this never comes through in the show.
I wanted to bring that forward by making her value comfort over high-fashion. Her dress resembles a nightgown and her shoes being indoor slippers.
Her hair, obviously, is the main focus of her design, and is the only part she has customised with beads, hoops and jewellery. It is so long she has looped it around herself to the point where it becomes an accessory itself.
In every event when she’s given a new outfit i.e Dragon Games or a school dance, her being black opens the door to new styles and silhouettes that are impossible with weaker, straighter hair. Cornrows, dreadlocks, natural, dreadlocks, wicks, bantu knots etc. She’s the Hair Princess, let her hair be 1000% more exciting than the other princesses loose waves.
(I also like the idea that she can change her hair in a way that is truly incomprehensible. She’s getting ready for True Hearts Day and walks into the bathroom with tight, 50 foot micro-braids, walks out five minutes later with fully-formed dreadlocks. No one has figured out how she’s doing this, and Holly doesn’t understand why no one can do it).
Poppy: I wanted Poppy to both be a matched set with her sister in some cases, and be her natural opposite in others;
In my mind Poppy is the only person Holly has ever known outside of her witch, with Poppy sneaking into her tower in secret. (Whether this is canon in the books, or if Poppy has always been allowed to see her sister, I don’t know). With this in mind, I had ropes and loose fabric acting as a belt around Poppy’s waist, resembling Holly’s flowing hair with hoops and beads; even having them both tied in a bow; by Poppy’s waist and around Holly’s neck.
I tried to keep the flower motif from the original by having Poppy’s bantu knots look like roses, as well as them being dyed white to Holly’s black; an obvious yin/yang.
I also wanted to lean into the ‘adventuring, rebel tomboy’ idea, by giving her loose-fitting pants, and short hair. But still keeping the fantasy world-building in mind by taking inspiration from historical mens fashion; much like her sister Poppy also prefers to be comfortable, wearing breathable fabric and showing more skin. While also embracing her individuality by having dyed hair, and colourful makeup. She doesn’t look like any of the other girls in Ever After High, as she has no reference for the specific gender roles they’ve all grown up under.
Character Re-write:
My version of Poppy has spent her life adventuring; seeing the world and different cultures so she can come home and tell her sister. Acting as the barrier between her sister and the outside world, creating co-dependency. This is why Holly needs her for support when attending EAH, and what gives her a unique outlook in the Royal/Rebel position. She has never been exposed to the propaganda, and is fully able to decide her own fate. But she also doesn’t try to understand or respect the pressure, or the worldview from the other students, regardless of their position. She is an outcast on both sides.
In this rewrite Poppy is responsible for bringing Holly supplies, as the witch often leaves for months at a time. This includes fabric to make new clothes; Holly asked Poppy to bring her the same pants Poppy wore, Holly then cut them into a new dress so they could match. As well as the only short braid Holly has being so she can look partly like Poppy.
The sister’s relationship only bends in one direction; Poppy enjoys being her sister’s hero; being the one to introduce her to the world. It’s a level control over her sister she’s not even aware she has. Although subconsciously, Poppy looks down on Holly, infantilising her and inherently seeing her as childish and naive. Poppy likes being the smart one, having Holly rely on her for the adventures and experiences she will never have. They genuinely love each other, but there’s an imbalance neither of them are aware of.
But then they go to Ever After High. And suddenly Holly isn’t a simple girl trapped away from the world, she’s a part of something bigger than herself. Grimm reminds them that Holly was born to carry a great legacy, to push forward the new generation, and that she’s a key movement in the world’s history.
When they enter school together, Poppy starts getting territorial over the new friends Holly makes. These other princesses understand Holly and connect with her; the weight of her role, her future, and her responsibilities. Something that Poppy has always brushed off is now something she can’t even begin to comprehend.
The other students do clamber at Poppy the way her sister used to, eager to hear her stories and the life someone can live without a pre-written fate. But surrounded by royalty, curses, magic and non-humans, Poppy’s stories fall flat to her. She sees her classmates and thinks they’re laughing at her, that there’s nothing she can tell them they’ll care about. She doesn’t know she’s scared they’ll look at her the way she’s looked at Holly.
For the first time their roles have changed, with Holly being important and Poppy being nothing. Poppy, embarrassed and insecure, refuses to embrace the rebels, and turns her nose up at them.
The rebels try to explain the importance of their stories, the pressure put on them, the sword of Damocles that swings over their heads. And Poppy laughs them off; the entire concept of legacies is ridiculous to her. She doesn’t understand the world they’ve lived in and how that affects how these students live and think. And she doesn’t want to.
Poppy proudly states that she is neither a Royal nor a Rebel, and that to live even in tandem with these stories is beneath her. It doesn’t affect her, she doesn’t like how it makes her feel small, and it’s taking her sister away from her.
Everyone loves a cycle aware Orpheus but what about a cycle aware Eurydice? Eurydice who tries her hardest to resist the hunger and the cold. Tries to convince Orpheus to just LOOK UP time and time again to no avail. Eurydice who KNOWS and still fails. She knows he’s gonna turn around. She knows they’re not gonna make it out of hell together. But she hopes. Every time she hopes that he loves her a little bit less than the last time. Hopes he won’t look back. But of course, Orpheus is still Orpheus. And he loves her more than anything.
