#JackedKirby - Crime NEVER Pays! π₯π₯π₯ Lots of people that love golden age comics know that Jack Kirby and Joe Simon did loads of work for heavyweights Timely (Marvel) Comics And National (DC) Comics... but what they may not know is they did some of their most high volume sales working over at another company.... Prize Comics, a Crestwood Publications subsidiary that had switched over to comics from pulp magazines in the early 1940s! π₯π₯π₯ Jack and Joe came to Prize in 1947 to pursue more βreal lifeβ comic stories... the boys jumped on the trend of Romance, True Crime, Horror and War stories instead of superhero/sci-fi topics. Young Romance was a huge hit in 1947 for the team... and they moved on to Headline Comics next, a crime title that published stories ripped from the headlines/history books. π₯π₯π₯ #Issue23 of the series has a street date of April 1947 and sees Simon/Kirby taking on such heavyweights as Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson And Guy Fawkes... yup, THAT Guy Fawkes! π₯π₯π₯ Fawkes isnβt your typical gangster, he is more of a patriotic terrorist. A former English soldier, he plotted with numerous likeminded patriots to kill the King of England in order to bring freedom to the country. Unfortunately their plot was foiled, and Guy was tortured and hung. He never gave up his co-conspirators, and even though he was trying to kill a sitting King he was doing so for the right reasons! To this day November 5th (the day of the attack) is celebrated as a national holiday in England. Fawkes was also the inspiration for V in V for Vendetta, Alan Mooreβs controversial 80βs comic series. Simon and Kirby worked on these stories as a true team, flipping back and forth between writing/art duties, but Jack was primarily responsible for pencils. They do a great job of handling this historical artwork and story in a 8 page feature... I especially love the last panel (pic 6) that shows a dangling Fawkes in the Hangmanβs Noose.
