#JackedKirby - The Red Skull SUPREME!!! 💥💥💥 The battle between Cap and The Red Skull over the Cosmic Cube is one of the greatest story arcs in the Super Soldiers history.... it took place over several issues in Tales if Suspense towards the end of the anthology comics run. This post refers to #Issue81 of the comic, published in September of 1966. Continuing the story from the past issue, Skull has possession of the Cosmic Cube and he intends to use it to create an army of super warriors to conquer the UNIVERSE. Cap knows that this means a lot of death for the “unworthy” so he needs to get that cube... and fast! 💥💥💥 Pic 1 shows the original pencil/ink version of the image, and you can see the editing that was done to the image around Red Skull’s mouth (the white Out marks are clearly viable). We also see extensive margin notes providing key plot lines (Pic 2) from Jack to Stan across the bottom of the page. The margin notes signify both the power of the actual cube, the intention of how Skull plans to use it and finally that Cap NEEDS to take it from him by all means necessary! The final pic of the post is the original newsprint color version of the page (pic 3). 💥💥💥 The margin notes in this one are key evidence in the proof that Jack (and other Marvel artists) did WAY more then just draw the images from a comic... they plotted the action and provided instruction for the writer to come behind them and dialogue the completed story. #JackedKirby - To You... From The Kid!!! 💥💥💥 The Rawhide Kid one of Marvel’s original OG characters, dating back to the days of Atlas Comics when he was brought to life by Stan Lee and artist Bob Brown. But 16 issues into the series Jack was brought on and the character took on a different set of characteristics and aesthetic thanks to his unique vision. This is the Rawhide Kid that most fans of those older Atlas/Marvel western comics know and love so well... 💥💥💥 Jack would work on Rawhide Kid from the early 60s all the way through #Issue32 (1963) while he was also busy knocking out Marvel’s “Superhero Revolution” with FF, Hulk, Avengers and X-Men! 💥💥💥 Even though Western titles began to fade, by the late 60s/early 70s Marvel was heavy in the reprint game. They would cobble together anthology horror and western books using many of the short stories from the 50s/60s Atlas/Marvel archives. This was done in a popular anthology book Mighty Marvel Westerns (68-74). 💥💥💥 To make these reprints more appealing they would often feature new covers and insets from modern artists. #JackedKirby - The Surfer Creates... Quasimodo!!! The Fantastic Four might very well be Jack Kirby's greatest contribution to the comic industry. Not only did it re-launch super hero comics into the modern era, but it has provided us with some of the most memorable supporting characters in comics history. From Galactus to the Inhumans and everyone in between... they all came through the pages of the FF! Silver Surfer is definitely one of those creations. Ever since he first appeared in FF #Issue48 he has been a fan fave, and that spilled over into tons of guest appearances and even his own series. One of the coolest appearances he made was in a back up story in the Fantastic Four #Annual5 from November of 1967. In it he gets a distress call from the Quasimodo computer asking him for assistance. Quasimodo wants to be turned into a human, and he begs Silver Surfer to use his cosmic powers to help him with this request. Silver Surfer is touched by the request and grants it to him... which leads to Quasimodo promptly attacking NYC! He is eventually stopped by the Surfer and turned into a statue atop a clock in Manhattan. The story is a throw away and doesn't have much bearing on the Marvel Universe besides Quasimodo becoming a human being. But some of the art in this small back up story is astounding. Take this full page splash from when Surfer transforms Quasimodo... it is SO POWERFUL! The red background with the black Kirby Krackle... the yellow and orange energy on the transforming Quasimodo... and of course the ever powerful Silver Surfer's shiny white visage overseeing the whole thing! #JackedKirby - Since it's Game of Thrones night... I have been holding this one for tonight for some time. Way back in #Issue20 of the Fantastic Four (which was published in November of 1963) a young George RR Martin wrote a letter to Stan & Jack to commend them on what he thought was a phenomenal issue of the FF back in #Issue17 (published in August of 1963). Or was he... Seems like young Maester Martin may have been taking some shots at the throne with his subtle jabs at things that occurred in #issue17. He is also not above calling out Jack & Stan's shortcomings in the beginning of the FF run! His writing is quite sharp for a guy just shy of his 13th bday when the letter was written.
