in my world religions class, on the 1rst day the professor made the distinction between a religion and a cult. Her definition of a cult was pretty simple: an organization with high secrecy and high control
To anyone who just left the cult of Jehovah's Witnesses, here are a few tips I've learned along way that really helped me acclimate to life outside the religion hope you'll find this useful :)
Write a list of all the new things you want to experience ex. Getting a tattoo or for me it was going to a fortune teller. You'll be surprised by how many activities/hobbies/interests you'll be adding to your list and this keeps your mind focused on positive aspects
Consider going to a therapist who specializes in religious abuse/cult survivors. Even something as small as visiting with them once a month can make a huge difference
Keep a journal and write it in daily. This helps organize your thoughts and is a healthy way to express your emotions (and trust me exiting a cult leaves you with a lot of emotions)
Consider going back to school. Now you're free to study whatever you want wherever you want. You can finally go to that university you've always dreamed of
Focus on the fact that you can have any career you want. There are no restrictions whats so ever. Feel free to explore as many different paths as you want
Make new friends. This one will be hard but also necessary. I'm always here as an online friend tho :)
The hardest one of the all is to block any abusive witness contacts from your phone. After I was disfellowshipped an elder actually texted me and told me I was weak. If anyone says something like that to you just block them. Hopefully you won't have to but just in case
And just stay healthy and focused, you'll get through this ❤
