Nobody
I've spent over half my life Retreating, withdrawing This is a world unwelcome A land that owes no favors. Cold nights ensconced in shadow Find my throat frostbitten I scream into the dawning light Where shade gives way to the void. Living in a land of outstretched hands, Of vacant smiles and mouths That speak forever, but say nothing. In the folds of a place I don't belong. Drowning in a sea of hallowed grounds Of hollow eyes and hearts That seek forever but never find The peace of mind I hide between the lines. What difference is a ghost alive, A body dead? Who can miss What was never there? Always apart, goodbyes said years too early. A notable absence of storm clouds When I find my way back home And, just like the rain, Mourning will never arrive. Sky stretching out blue Forever, the heavens Spare no tears for me, On earth already forgotten. So I reach for you Nevermore, the abyss Is the sole witness When this body is laid to rest. A collaboration with the talented, amusing, and intellectually stimulating @jasongrabowski !
