Dally’s death perfectly encapsulates his life. To an outside perspective he died because he broke the law. He was a 'hoodlum' who died pursuing a life of crime. To outside perspectives, that's who he was: a heartless kid who broke the law. But really, he died for love. He died because he couldn’t live on without Johnny, the only person who truly knew him. Johnny saw that Dally wasn’t just a criminal, but a broken kid.

dally and johnny obviously are suicidal people that openly don’t care about their own lives. johnny runs into a burning building to save the kids, dally runs after him and also does a lot of dangerous stuff that can potentially kill him (rodeos, driving like he does, drunk fights). and they see that in each other. that’s one of the things they know and accept, but still care about each other’s lives so much they hope it saves the other person. and it doesn’t. dally doesn’t save johnny by taking him out of the church, and johnny doesn’t save dally by asking ponyboy to show him the world’s beauty in the letter.
