Ancient (1990's) Internet Wisdom
In recent years, the algorithm, aka the advertisers, decided to measure "engagement". With computer based servers plentiful and relatively inexpensive, and all information logged, it's easy to track and measure individual viewers of any particular information. It's why the web industry wants so very much to be able to track viewers. More "engagement " means more money. It's one of the reasons various celebrities use outrage -- statements, actions, photos & videos, positions, philosophies that are farther from something regarded as normal -- to generate "engagement", and thus print money.
What's also not widely understood is that meta conversations about trolls are still "engagement".
I've been using filters to help me avoid "engaging" with trolls. Often, but not always, ignoring trolls starves then of enough "engagement" they wander off, leaving the rest of us in peace. Sometimes, though, it's necessary to filter all references to the trolls, since the moderators -- online and in real life -- may not exist or may be trolls themselves.
There are certain contemporary individuals and groups who have made huge investments in systems that generate -- and measure -- engagement [cough! T***p cough twi***r cough cough M*** cough]. Since enough of their money comes from trollish behavior, I try to remember -- and practice -- the ancient wisdom : don't feed the trolls.
