I'm so tired of people killing spiders, centipedes, roaches, etc. Just for... existing. Like guys, please leave them alone. So in the interest of encouraging people to let these buggos live, here is a defense of each
First, spiders eat 400-800 million tons of insects and other pests annually, while humans eat 400 million tons of food annually, making them one of the most important animals for pest control [source]. Also, in the US like 4 species of spiders live in homes out of the hundreds of species in North America: also, spiders don't crawl into your mouth at night, the chances of them even falling in are so astronomically low you'd be better off winning the powerball [source]
This section is more specifically about house centipedes, as thats what most people interact with. House centipedes are harmless, and in fact beneficial. Unlike spiders which if you were allergic could kill you, house centipede bites are incredibly negligible and rare, just clean it with soap and water and let it heal [source]. House centipedes are mainly beneficial, as they are predators which eat small arthropods and pests, like mites, lice, fleas, baby roaches, and more. Although a large population of house centipedes could indicate a pest problem, so keep that in mind [source]
Now to be fair, roaches are the most understandable for killing on site. They don't really directly help in many meaningful ways (although they do eat crumbs and stuff, so they kinda help clean) and can spread diseases (depends on species and population). But still, most of the hate of cockroaches is mainly just their appearance and that they live in our homes. However, only about 30 species out of the roughly 4,600 species of roaches are pests to humans, and the ones that are are typically there because we built our houses over where they lived before, and roaches are nothing if not adaptable. Also yes the source may be Wikipedia but I will hear nothing about it "not being reliable". If it really bothers you, find another source, Wikipedia just gets straight to the point in an easy to understand way [source]
So yeah, thats my defenses of these three "pests". But honestly, I don't even think these arguments are necessary, I don't care if a pest is beneficial or not, it's a living creature which has been proven to be able to feel pain, so they deserve empathy. I understand not liking these bugs, they can look freaky, but at least use the cup and paper strategy and release them. If you want to exterminate roaches though, I won't blame you. I just want people to stop demonizing these insects, especially roaches since they're one of the most important detritivores in the world, and practically every ecosystem they are a part of would fall apart without them or be worse off.
TL;DR: Please let these insects live peacefully and don't demonize them for just adapting to the situations we put them in. If you don't want them in your house, then use a cup and paper to catch and release them. And if you are going to eradicate them, do it as humanely as possible please, contrary to what many seem to believe, arthropods are fully capable of feeling pain, and there's even evidence of basic emotions like fear and joy as well.
