here’s what i want: the year is 2050. renesmeé has physically been in her late teens/early twenties since the mid-2000’s. she meets a girl in a freshman year sociology class on campus while pursuing her tenth bachelors degree. she falls head over heels when the girl dismantles a classmates argument about the abolishment of affirmative action. renesmeé is hesitant to approach on her so as not to expose the cullens but finds herself moving a few seats closer to the feisty girl with the docs every class. one day the girl asks for a pencil and they strike up a conversation and renesmeé is hooked. one spring break the cullens decide a private villa in the depths of chilé will be fun. they cross paths with huilen, nahuel, and one of his sisters, maysun, who has defected away from the negative influence of her eugenics-obsessed father and now lives with nahuel and hulien. maysun, always a bit nomadic, decides to return with the cullens back to the states so she can try out vegetarianism for a bit. renesmeé notices a spark with maysun too. things progress. she must choose between someone who understands her completely and someone who appeals to her humanity the way nobody else ever has.

That probably should have been, thematically, what happened.  Either they defeat the Volturi or recruit more to the vegetarian cause.  As it stands nothing changes in the vampire world after the epic non-fight.  The Cullens don't die.  That's all that happens.  Sure, a few more vampires are a bit more skeptical of the Volturi and their motives, but the Volturi can still crush anyone other than the Cullens (because they have Bella's shield) so it's not like anything has really changed.  And Edward even says they'll be back someday so. . . yeah.  There should have been some sort of tangible shift in the vampire world.  If not wiping out the Volturi, more vegetarians could have been something at least.Nahuel and his sisters, as well as the Children of the Moon stuff, totally came off like deus ex machina in the end because they seemed to come out of nowhere.  Like Caius would actually care that the Quileutes were not the exact kind of werewolves that tried to kill him.  And Nahuel and his sisters. . . she could have hinted at that better.  There's a little there with the cleaning ladies' legends at all, but if a few other characters had expressed the idea "She can't be the only one," instead of "SHE IS IMPOSSIBLY UNIQUE AND ONE OF A KIND AND THERE IS NONE OTHER LIKE HER" over and over again it would have worked out better, IMO.  SM likes to 'surprise' her readers rather than subtly foreshadow things, but personally I find most of these 'surprises' to be really contrived and forced.  I mean ARO, of all people, should have been like, "I had heard stories of such creatures but did not believe it!" not like "SHE IS NOTHING I HAVE EVER DREAMED OF IN OUR HISTORY!!!"  It's a subtle distinction, but it would have made the sudden addition of Nahuel and his sisters at the very end easier to swallow.  And for what it's worth I find Nahuel's aunt's story utterly heartbreaking and a thousand times more interesting than Bella's. This poor girl was doing everything she could to save her sister from a demon pregnancy, helped deliver the monster baby who promptly bit her and turned her into the very creature that had used and killed her sister.  And then she has to raise her monster nephew as a monster she never wanted to be herself.  Yikes!  Poor thing!  Hulien didn't wake up to a loving family and new cottage and a new car and a new wardrobe and easy acceptance of vampirism.
