Duality of an immortal

I mentioned that Elazar currently has a sentient rock in his chest. Well…here it is!

Discovered by Elazar in Enacapa, an old dig site previously abandoned when the funding ran dry. The legends surrounding it claim it is the petrified core/essence of an elder god that died and fell to earth eons ago, eventually dug out of its rotting corpse by an ancient civilization and revered for its rejuvenating and healing properties.

Now that it's bonded to Elazar, it acts as a sort of nigh indestructible "backup drive" for his body and soul, resetting him at the moment right after his first death (which is why the scars he had previously don't heal). The more extensive the damage, the longer it will take to repair him, taking anywhere from a few minutes to several months. It won't heal non-fatal injuries, although it prevents Elazar from getting sick and aging like a normal person.

The Heart can relocate itself to a more ideal location when it is time to resurrect Elazar, crawling around on extendable limbs like a brittle star or, in rare cases, vibrating through solid matter. It doesn't always make the judgement for the benefit of its host and will occasionally respawn Elazar in dangerous positions that lead to him dying again (usually after the man hurls verbal abuse at it).

This is a character I created almost 5 YEARS AGO (holy shit, that number doesn't seem real) and never shared outside of private chats with close friends, but I am now quite fond of him after giving him ample time to cook. XD

Before his adventures in immortality, Elazar was an explorer and treasure hunter at heart. A chunk of his income was from the artifacts, fossils, and other strange objects he retrieved from across the land from the remains of forgotten civilizations (and some not so forgotten, but a score was a score). The fateful excursion was for the Heart of Raasmas, buried in a tomb beneath the earth. He only skimmed through the legends of its rejuvenating and healing properties, the old story that the petrified stone in the center was dug from the heart of a long dead elder god. Elazar was more interested in the score at the end of the day. The explorer descended deeper, finding troves of odd trinkets but not the big bonus he was hoping for...until he misjudged a leap, slipped, and plummeted into the deepest sacred chamber to his death. The last thing he remembered was staring up at the sharp pillar of the ceremonial altar impaling his sternum, his blood bathing a familiar looking amulet embedded within, growing brighter by the second... Elazar eventually regains consciousness, fully resurrected with a gnarly looking scar and a cursed artifact replacing his heart. He is soon hit by an amazing yet horrifying realization: very time he dies, the artifact “resets” him to state he was in when the artifact bonded with him, no matter what condition his body is in. The existential crisis initially drove him mad, but as time passed he eventually grew "bored" of wallowing in grief and decided to make the most of his new gift. Set on living out his immortal life to the fullest, Elazar becomes even more of a risk-taking daredevil than he was previously, itching to experience all the pleasure (and pain) the world has to offer.
