NEW MAP: Australasia 1789: Mutiny on the Bounty (28 Apr 1789) https://buff.ly/2IdzlPw Even as the British were establishing the Colony of New South Wales, Western nations were beginning their first serious commercial ventures into the South Pacific. While on an expedition to transplant breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies, British Captain William Bligh was overthrown in a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian—who preferred life in the Pacific islands—and his ship, HMS Bounty, was seized. Cast adrift in a longboat, Bligh and his loyalists managed to row to the Dutch East Indies and eventually organize an expedition to hunt down the mutineers. I wholeheartedly think that possessions don't make up ones life, it's the experiences that make up the journey. For me however, I tread on both sides of the spectrum. As I grow older and look back at history and the past lives of others my appreciation for the things that once were grows everyday. Take the pennant I picked up at Brooklyn Flea for instance, I remember hearing about the HMS Bounty in history class as a kid. As an adult I had completely forgotten about its story and what occurred on that ship many years ago. Come to find out a few years back, during Hurricane Sandy, the replica of that ship (where I'm sure this old souvenir came from) capsized and sunk off the North Carolina shore. The unfortunate part is that only 14 of the 16 crew members made it out alive. Looking at the footage from that day now and researching the history once again I can't believe that I found this on that Sunday. I now hold a piece of history in my home and one that I'll cherish until the next owner crosses my path. Hopefully we'll get to talk about this story and keep those souls that have been lost to this ship alive in our memories. In that way, I am happy to be on this side of the spectrum sometimes. Hefty post here but figured this was an interesting little bit that happened recently.
