NASA celebrates the life and career of Nichelle Nichols, famous for her role of Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek, as she retires from public life.

Not only did Nichols portray a character that was an incredible role model, but in 1977, she also partnered with NASA to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency's shuttle program.

Nichols symbolized to so many what was possible and inspired young minds to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers.

In 1966, besides the premiere of Star Trek on NBC on Thursday night; there was also the premiere of Tarzan (starring Ron Ely) on NBC on Friday nights.

As a 12 year old I watched everything but the soap operas and the romances; and LOVED the westerns, action/adventure, and of course, immediately, Star Trek and the cast.

So, after watching the season one episode, Miri, on Thursday, Oct. 27; I was very surprised (and pleased) when I turned on Tarzan on Friday, Oct. 28; to see that Nichelle Nichols was guest starring in what turned out to be a two part episode of Tarzan; 'The Deadly Silence."

Nichelle portrayed Ruana, a single native tribeswoman, who was in live with Metusa (Robert DoQuji). Their village had been invaded by an evil colonel (Jock Mahoney), who enslaved their people. Ruana goes for Tarzan to get help.
