Mondays are a Drag | Part 2 of 2 Here is the second installment of vegetable costumes designed by P. Croce for the ballet Amor around 1886. Thank you to Dr. Eleanor Barnett of @historyeats for posting these a few weeks ago! After I saw these in her original post, I thought how amazing these would be as drag looks 👠 Out of all of them, my favorite is the head of lettuce 🥬 Its got legs for days! My second favorite is the radish. Did you know that Babka means “grandmother” in Polish — although I read recently that some people consider it rude! Who knew! So let’s stick to the cake, which is similar to Easter bread, except babka originated with Jewish grandmas who first made it with leftover challah dough. And, btw, they never used chocolate— that’s a new world thing. Anyway, call it what you will, it is scrumptious! Add some chopped candied fruit and icing and you’ve got an Easter bread. (Recipe in the profile and on my blog. It includes chocolate!) And it is pretty, don’t you think? So I am entering this photo in the latest #historyeatsillustrated challenge that features a lovely painting of an Easter table, complete with an Easter bread (by Ukrainian artist Viktor Zaretzky). I follow #historyeats, by Dr. Eleanor Barnett. Every day she posts a painting that includes food or some ingredient and then says something really interesting about it — like today, there was a painting of an apricot tree and Dr. Barnett said the word apricot comes from “precocious” because apricot trees are among the earliest to bloom. Who knew!? Anyway, she also mentioned a “challenge” to post a work of art that includes apricots. Well, I am no artist! So I can’t do that! But maybe I could meet the challenge by posting this lovely dish, khoshaf, which includes apricots (the dried kind). It’s a Middle Eastern Muslim specialty made by macerating dried fruit. It is beautiful in my opinion and also traditional during Ramadan, which started on April 2nd, and is also a perfect post Seder dessert for Passover, which begins April 15th. So: khoshaf is my entry into the #historyeatsillustrated challenge.
