If someone harasses you under your posts/vids/whatever because they hate the ship/characters in it… remember they're bumping up the engagement.

But not only that, they're telling the algorithm they enjoy the very thing they're hating on! And the algorithm brings them more of THE thing.

So they're essentially the ones getting screwed by their actions the most by: 1) promoting your work, 2) asking for more of the same in their recommendations

Once again, for all the hateful antis in the back who feel the need to police people & their creativity & might come across this since they tend to lurk in the ship tags:

And to the normal people: it sucks getting hate, but the haters end up getting the short end of the stick eventually, so there's some comfort in that. I guess hate asks are another thing, but if you're the creator and they interact with your content directly, they're essentially helping you and screwing things up for themselves. You can, of course, always block the haters, but I think it's hilarious to set them up for fuming over the same kind of content they detest by not doing that. Let them get the algorithmic karma. 🙏

I am glad that there are more shippers in the fandom who respect Astrid and her relationship with Hiccup. But there are still a lot of similar stories. Many authors just cannot write fan fiction about their favorite couple without offending Hiccstrid. And that's the real problem. I am very sorry that for a long time I lacked the determination to raise this topic.

It has been two years since I first posted on tumblr!

Ohhhhh man. Oh man. I was going to go all in with you on the subject of Astrid getting railroaded for setting her sights on anyone outside of Hiccup (as she was a gift to Hiccup in the first movie and therefore should not stray… though the fandom is far, far more guilty of this cowardice, which I’ve ranted about before) but then you said it.

Hiccup didn’t even need to apologize to Astrid in the aftermath of the Heather Report

Hell, if you want to get historical about it, Hiccup was under obligation to be hospitable.

Heather’s purpose wasn’t even about seducing Hiccup as a distraction to her “devious” and pretty altruistic plans.

All the “Ewwww, a triangle! Heather’s there to get in between Hiccup and Astrid! Hiccup’s thinking with his dick! Astrid baby uwu!” sorta bullshit all stemmed from a bit of distasteful (if desperate) advertising beforehand. And none of it read in the actual Heather Report episodes. Something that became abundantly clear to me as I had to crawl through them for a scripting project at the time.

Man, sorry, but so much of Heather-hate is literally fostered at the source of that advertising. They’d rather sell a bad interpretation of a “love triangle” to get more viewers than let the far superior natural plot speak for itself. They straight up sacrificed their original character’s reputation to garner interest in the episode, which, to me, speaks volumes on how they felt they were doing with the show, and their impression of their audience (not that they were wrong on the audience part, were they? -_-) . You want to talk a matter of “fan-interpretation?”. That’s Heatcup.

And back to my point up above, Astrid has, in fact, been allowed more depth of relationship with others in both the TV show and HTTYD2, than Hiccup has been allowed… specifically in the TV show. For that, Hiccup’s gained allies and little more. He’s almost the least-touched character of the lot; walled in for fear of messing with a protagonist who really gets to shine in the films alone. Astrid, however, has gone ham with Heather and Eret respectively. Sure, it’s not “romantic”, and, thankfully, it’s not skewed for, as you put it, “dramatic tension”. It’s real, and natural--about as natural as things get in the TV show.

And since the TV show is the subject of my mini rant, I’ll say that Heatstrid, on screen, has far more merit in both obvious plot and character interaction, than Heatcup. Astrid gets her extra relationships, at least. And they’re wholesome.

But I get your initial point, even if one teeny tiny phrase set me off (:D). Somewhere on my blog, or dozens of places in itty bitty fragments, I’ve complained again and again that Astrid, on the whole, by the fans, simply isn’t allowed to have multiple love interests. Thugstrid, Eretstrid, Heatstrid (and not for getting off on ‘yuri’) Snotstrid, Tuffstird... anything that doesn’t read Hiccstrid is, on the whole, far less acceptable than [insert-name-here]cup. Even most of the yaoi crap would rather vilify or kill off Astrid than have her happy with someone else (or alone!). SO ANNOYING.
