#green bean paste

Here is my cup of less sweet milk tea ☕️ and pastries sis bought from downtown. Those on the left are Sweet Tau Sar Piah (甜豆沙饼) filled with sweetened mung bean 🫘 paste. The dome-shaped ones are Walnut & Lotus Seed Paste Pastries (核桃莲蓉酥) with sweet lotus seed paste inside a crumbly pastry embedded with walnuts.

While their other bakes like buns and cakes are just garden variety, Moji Bakery do have one saving grace. Their pastries were very good like this Yuan Yang Pastry (鸳鸯豆沙饼) which has both salty and sweet bean paste in it. Each piece cost S$1.50 and about double the size of a traditional Tau Sar Piah (豆沙饼).

Received this Meat Floss with Lotus Paste Biscuit (肉丝莲蓉饼) from my colleague. She herself got this snack from Guan Heong Biscuit Shop (源香饼舖) in Malaysia through the help of another colleague. The combination of sweet pandan lotus seed paste and savoury meat floss brings out multiple aromas, textures and flavours all in one crunchy bite. Also shown on the left of it, is a Sweet Tau Sar Piah (甜豆沙饼) bought from elsewhere.

Sweet Green Bean Puffs (甜豆沙饼) and Salty Green Bean Puffs (咸豆沙饼) with sesame seeds from Hanis Cafe. Tradtitional tau sar piahs are typically made with the addition of pork lard in the process but Hanis Cafe and Bakery Pte Ltd is the halal certified sister company of Hans Cafe & Cakehouse so their products are catered for the Muslim community. Though still good, these batch of pastries weren’t as fresh tasting as the previous ones we have gotten, maybe because they are already out of the oven for a few days.

Sis bought these snacks from Tai Chong Kok Confectionery (大中国饼家) at Northpoint City. From the left, Walnut Yolk Puffs ($2.50 each) with whole salted egg yolk encased in sweet lotus seed paste and pastry, then studded with walnuts. In the middle, Red Bean Paste Pastries (S$1.20 each) and lastly, Savoury Tau Sar Piahs (S$1 each) with its salty sweet green bean paste filling that melts in the mouth with the fragrance of shallot oil.

These tau sar piahs or the English way of calling them - puffs, are from Hanis Café & Bakery, the halal sister company of Han's Café & Cake House. Both the Sweet Green Bean Puffs (S$1.20 each) and the Yam Puffs (S$1.40 each) tasted just as good as the Chinese counterpart though these doesn’t incorporated pork lard in their recipes. They are also not sickening sweet as some Malays desserts tended to be.
