Which bread would you rather eat?
Italian Bread (Left)
Baguette (Right)
I can't eat either of them due to allergy or intolerance
This one greets you and hope that you are well. He also hopes that you can help with a situation that has plagued khajiit for years.
You see, this one's husband is a dunmer and while Ra'Kar loves him deeply this sometimes prove troublesome - especially in the kitchen. Despite khajiit's numerous attempts, he still can't stomach moonsugar and this one is at their wit's end. For khajiit cooking is the ultimate way of showing love, and it pains them greatly that their husband can't partake in the holiness that is moonsugar dishes.
This one has been in awe of your expertise for a very long time, and humbly ask for your wisdom in this. Specifically, khajiit has been thinking of branching out to cuisines other than khajiiti, and wonders if you have any suggestions for him. Ra'Kar is mostly thinking of savoury dishes that still packs some punch of sweetness. While they are of course not saying it would be the same thing as the crystallized moonlight (as that would be deeply blasphemous), they would still want the one they love the most to be able to partake in the umami goodness that savoury and sweet dishes often provide.
Rajhin's luck be with you,
Dear Ra'Kar,
Thankfully, sweet and savoury dishes are commonplace across Tamriel, and no, they don't necessarily require moon sugar! The following is a list of dishes that branch out from Khajiiti cuisine (though of course, it would be amiss to exclude Elsweyr from this list).
Altmer
In Summerset, one of the most popular sweet and savoury dishes hails from the island of Auridon, specifically the city of Skywatch. A local tavern mainstay is venison stew, made with tender chunks of venison with an array of root vegetables, swimming in a thick sugar beet-based deer stock. The gaminess of the venison is balanced perfectly by the sweetness of the stew base, that is satisfyingly filling.
Argonians
Black Marsh cuisine is no stranger to combinations of flavours, and today I introduce a personal favourite: rujak. This refreshing dish can be considered a salad of sorts, that starts with a base of seasonal fruits such as mango, guava, pineapple, and more. The fruits are doused in a sauce made from a palm sugar base, enriched with shrimp paste, tamarind paste, chili, lime, and a pinch of salt. While it may sound a bit odd, it's very refreshing in the tropical heat!
Bosmer
While sweetgnats are best known for their use in smoking pipes, the Bosmer also use these little bugs as paste to sweeten their food without breaking the Green Pact. Deep in the heart of Greenshade, you'll find a local delicacy: timber mammoth chops marinated in a rich barbecue sauce made from a base of sweetgnats, honey, jagga, and fermented meat. These massive chops are meant to be shared among friends, and come to your table sliced and grilled a perfect medium-rare (don't you dare ask for well done!).
Bretons
The nobility of Alcaire Castle in the Third Era made popular a specific dish that caught on with the general populace of the Stormhaven, and eventually swept across the whole of High Rock. What was it that took Breton food culture by storm? Why, none other than beignets filled with roquefort and fig compote! Beignets are one of the backbones of Breton pastries, and while these deep fried choux dainties come filled and unfilled, the particular combination of pungent, salty melted roquefort with the delicate sweetness of the fig compote has captured hearts and tastebuds across the Province (mine included).
Dunmer
Ash yams, how I love them! My dish of choice for your particular predicament is ash yam and saltrice falafels, sweetened with fetcherfly honey. You can buy them generally in boxes of four to a dozen in any Dunmeri community from Blacklight to Windhelm, or have them as a tasty addition to a guar or nix-ox shawarma wrap. These filling patties are crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and oh-so moreish! Definitely a must-try, which goes perfectly with any dipping sauce (creamy garlic is my favourite).
Imperials
Skingrad's favourite dish is something that will certainly whet your appetite: the humble filet mignon, but with a twist. 30-day aged steak is stuffed with an assortment of fresh herbs, as well as finely diced apple and rhubarb, and a good pinch of pecorino cheese. This stuffed Steak à la Skingrad is the perfect blend of juicy, meaty perfection that simply explodes with a medley of flavours from the sweet and fruity rhubarb and apple, earthy herbs, and sharp pecorino. Maybe it's time for me to head back to Skingrad for a visit, my mouth is simply drooling just thinking about it!
Khajiit
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but how could I exclude one of my favourite dishes from Northern Elsweyr from this selection? Yes, I know that you, everyone in your lineage, and probably every Khajiit in existence will curse me for suggesting I serve this with toffee-orange sauce instead of traditional moon sugar curry, but hear me out...just simple, breaded pork katsu. We all know and love traditional Khajiiti katsu with a sweet and savoury moon sugar gravy, but it's time to put a Talviel spin on a classic. Create your katsu curry sauce as usual, but toss in a couple of cubes of toffee and a twist of orange juice. Pour it over your freshly-fried katsu and serve with a bit of orange zest on top. Thank me later.
Nords
We all know that Nords love rabbit meatballs, but did you know that we have several types of gravy that we serve alongside them? One of these gravies is a combination of molasses and juniper in beef bone stock, lending a sweet flavour and delicious aroma. Serve alongside boiled or roasted potatoes with snowberry jam, and you'll be eating like a true Nord!
Orcs
Anyone who complains that Orcish food lacks nuance and complexity knows nothing about Orcish food, plain and simple. This dish is one that's a Skyrim stronghold staple: jazbay grape raisin-stuffed pheasant. The premise is simple: stuff your pheasant with sourdough breadcrumbs, a hearty handful of jazbay grape raisins, and some fresh thyme and sage. Roast until the skin is crisp, and serve in thick slices atop mashed potatoes with sweet-savoury wrathberry gravy.
Redguards
This one is going to sound a little strange to most of you unfamiliar with Alik'r cuisine, but camel koftas doused with a sweet-spicy coconut yoghurt gravy is a meal worth remembering. These grilled patties are made with spiced, minced camel meat and bulgur, and grilled to juicy perfection. They're then topped with a thick yoghurt gravy, sweetened with coconut sugar and spiced with bird's eye chilis. Absolutely mouthwatering, especially with some salted banana goat's milk lassi on the side.
