Sonic Battle has the chaos emeralds being broken up into shards, which can be recombined together once collected. The broken pieces still have enough energy to be used as a power source for the Phi robots.
Oh that actually reminds me, at the end of Sonic Battle Emerl is killed and the chaos emeralds he had absorbed were shattered into pieces, and they imply that Emerl "lives on" to some capacity within the broken emeralds.
