Dousan Sailor Gelfling Puppet - Jim Henson Company 70th Anniversary Auction on Julien's Auctions, sold for $22,400 - Lot 128
"A Dousan Sailor Gelfling puppet from the prequel series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Netflix, 2019). She is seen in the seventh episode, "Time to Make... My Move," when skekMal the Hunter (performed by Kevin Clash and voiced by Ralph Ineson) comes upon a party of Dousans and intimidates them into telling him where Rian and company have gone. She is also seen again in the final episode of the series, "A Single Piece Was Lost," alongside the other members of the Dousan Clan who arrive in support of the rest of the Gelfling during the Second Battle of Stone-in-the-Wood. Puppet head sculpted by Mitch Devane.
The puppet's head is made of sculpted and foam latex hand-painted in striking blue and green tones with tribal markings, and with shimmering gray-blue yarn hair punched into it. Her costume is comprised of dupioni silk, appliqué, crisscrossing silk sash, layered peasant-style sleeves with linen underarm sleeve, and molded leather shoulder pads. Her headpiece is a mix of cotton, linen, and silk-blend braided together to create a turban. Throughout the ensemble are 3-D printed "bones" that symbolize the Dousan Clan's strong relationship with the circle of life and death.
Built inside of the puppet's head is a metal plate with two screws backed with magnets and affixed to the glass taxidermy eyes to allow the puppeteer to control the puppet's eyes. This metal plate also served as a resting place for the puppeteer's hand. A protective covering of either leather or another material was also built into the inner mouthpiece so the puppeteer's hand wouldn't sweat through. The body of the puppet is an articulated pod with foam arms with inner wooden dowels to create bone structures. The arms of the puppets were created to be foam latex up to the elbow and then have the ability to be Velcro'd on and off for easy replacement, as damage was a regular occurrence because of prop usage or rod replacement.
Dimensions: Overall: 37 x 17 x 13 inches"
An interesting thing to note is that the bones are not real! They are 3D printed!
If Rimmer had tried to touch Camille while she was in her ‘pleasure’ form (or if she tried to touch him) would he have felt it? I’m inclined to think yes since the crew can both see and hear her in multiple different ways at the same time and Kryten is able to smell WD40, so a false perception of touch doesn’t seem that much of a stretch.
why are there so many dismayed images of gelfling, and multiple of them are from Rian????
From a brilliant British space comedy, Red Dwarf. Not like David the Gnome or Gimli or whathaveyou, like I thought the first time I tried to watch it. I couldn't concentrate on it, because there was no forest or mushrooms or moss or leafmould...
Yonks later, I remembered that I hadn't seen it, and nothing else about it. It's become a perennial favorite since. Every time they come out with a new season, I rewatch from the beginning.
It began in like 1988, so yes it's a bit dated, sexist, gross... But also flipping hilarious. If you search YouTube for "Red Dwarf It's a Banana", that scene is what I like to show people to introduce them to the humor. I should go live there, in the UK.
This image is from an episode where they've encountered a despair squid on an ocean moon. The squid's ink is hallucinogenic, and makes them despair. They "wake up" out of an immersive video game they've been playing for years, their "real selves" complete opposites of who we've come to know them as. The slob who cleans the soup dispenser nozzles on a massive spaceship turns out to be a swanky, rich politician in a fascist society.
Anyway, that's where the image comes from- their group hallucination about actually coming from this fascist world, where a child is gunned down in the streets for stealing an apple "of the people".
