12 seasons and 5 novels of pure chaos

Basically, third technician Dave Lister sneaks a pregnant cat on board the Red Dwarf ship. As a punishment, he is suspended in stasis (basically freezed in time) until they reach shore leave.

Problem is, while he is suspended, a radiation leak kills the rest of the crew. The ship's AI Holly cannot safely let Lister out of stasis until the radiation is completely gone, so Lister awakens 3 million years after he was originally suspended.

He is the last human alive and to keep him sane, Holly brings back his bunkmate and superior technician Arnold Rimmer as a hologram to keep him company, since he exchanged the most words with him out of anyone on the ship. However, most of those words were bickering and teasing.

His pregnant cat gave birth while he was in stasis, and over 3 million years, those cats evolved into a humanoid species called Felis Sapiens. They're basically just vain humans who like eating fish. Rimmer and Lister meet the Cat (that's literally just his name LMAO) who is a member of this species.

Later in series 2, they meet Kryten, a mechanoid who is living on board the Nova 5 ship and still taking care of the crew members who died long ago, believing them to still be alive since he is programmed to serve. Lister helps him break his programming and he eventually becomes a member of the crew in series 3

Lister is just as tragic and has so much potential for emotional moments. Yet, the writers neglect him because he's not as visibly neurotic as Rimmer.

Lister's situation is really fucking depressing, man. He's the last human alive, with no hope of possibly making it back home (which is all he ever really wanted). He never forgave himself for not making something out of his life, and now he'll never get the chance. Even pre-accident, he'd basically lost everyone he considered family. I'm so angry at the show for barely focusing on how complex Lister actually is.

Also, we never really get a good look into Cat and Kryten's relationship. They've lived in close proximity for years, and I can't really think of a moment that displays how they feel abt eachother. In my opinion, I think there should've been a bottle episode (similar to Marooned) focused on Cat and Kryten.
