Camille has phonological dyslexia. The most common form of dyslexia and what you probably think of when you think of dyslexia. She also has dyscalculia which is a common co-morbity with dyslexia. She *really* struggles with school and has just been passed along with her peers. Mrs.Cassidy though doesn't want to just pass her along. She wants to get her help. James isn't the most supportive because he just doesn't understand. To him it's silly and he thinks she just needs to try harder. But after seeing her burst into tears a few times while doing homework together, he sees a little more that it's a massive struggle for her.

James and his sister was raised by a woman that needed men's approval and attention to get by. So there was men constantly over at the house. Some good, some okay, some bad. James' opinion really affected his mother given that he was a man in her life and she was always trying to gain his approval too. James figures this out when he's around thirteen and makes life hell for his mom. He's mean to her because he's angry that she puts him and his sister in unsafe situations. James and his mom has gotten in sooo many screaming (and crying on her end) matches because he tells her what a shitty mom she is. She struggles to keep a job because she puts her boyfriends first. It's a mess.

Camille was born to addict parents who did not want her but had her and liked her for a bit. Now she's just another mouth to feed. They treat her more like a roommate/cousin than they do their child. When Camille is thirteen, her big brother who is ten years older than her and her rock, is arrested, turning her life upside down. Being left alone with her mom and dad has been hard. It's around this time she meets James.

James and his best friend Devon (pronounced Dayvon) work at a store like Home Depot/Lowe's. They get a job because the dude who runs the store wants them to have something to do to keep them out of trouble. They want the money so they don't mind. The owner is probably the only adult that cares about these boys (Devon has a good mom and dad they just have demanding jobs and aren't around often and he's an only child. So he gets himself in trouble bc his best friend is James and has been since pre-k lol) and he really works with them to do the right thing and what not.
