So I was upset first about the SU proposal because they are babies!! and because it's a show for kids and I dont like telling kids that marriage is the end all goal in life. But then I thought about the scene and I really loved Connie's response (and Garnet's followup).
I thought about it. Kids do deal with relationships, love, and proposals. I did. My fiance (then boyfriend) originally proposed 6 months in. I was 16 and he was barely 18 (around the ages of steven/connie). Of course I cared about him, but I think my actual response was, "Have you lost your damn mind?? We're. In. HIGHSCHOOL." We were both babies. Too too young. I knew I loved him but I wasn't ready to commit to anything like that. More importantly I knew I wanted to grown independently. I wanted him to do the same.
I like that Connie basically says she still cares about Steven but that it's a no for now. I think that's a message that more people need to hear. You can say "not now". You can say that you still love them but that you're not ready. Heck you can even say you love them and want to be together forever but marriage isnt for you.
I also like that Garnet made the comment about couples being a compliment. Not a missing piece. This is another message that more people should hear. Dont pick a forever partner because you're afraid of being without them. Pick a forever partner because you actively want to be with them every single day. For a show that only focuses about love, I'm glad they talked about this. These are lessons that should be taught more often.
I think my boyfriend proposed at 6 months because he saw me as his missing piece. When he proposed almost 7 years later I think he realized I was his compliment. That's why I finally said yes.
Anyways, I wish I had been taught these lessons when I was a child.
And just like Connie, I didnt tell my mom he proposed the first time either.
