Last night, Arcana was knocking on Death's door. Could not stand up, or even open her eyes all the way. Labored breathing, crop not moving, head ticking, couldn't even lie down properly without towel support. The whole shebang. I did not expect her to even survive the night to make it to my first-thing-in-the-morning euthanasia appointment.

But Death wasn't home last night. When I got up this morning to get her ready to go (alive or dead she was going, I planned to get a necropsy afterward), she was just standing in the brooder, looking around as if nothing had happened. Crop empty, eyes clear, tracking me as I moved around her (which she hasn't been able to do in days). The food had been touched (eaten is another story but she had clearly pecked at it), which she hasn't done in weeks. So we went to the vet again.

Stubborn girl continues to fight for her life.

And finally, today, we got an answer from one of the panel tests. Aspergillosis. I made a 2 hour round trip out to pick up meds from a pharmacy lab that mixes up weird stuff, but if she can keep that fight for the next 48 hours, this stuff should clear it up. She might actually make it.

Aspergillus is a fungus that is... basically everywhere. There's hundreds of species and exposure to it is common and (generally speaking) harmless if you're a healthy adult. Arcana had just undergone a relocation to a colder state, separation from the birds she was in with, segregation away from birds she wanted to be with (quarantine), and was dealing with a GI yeast infestation when I got her, all of which could have caused stress enough to compromise her immune system to the point where asper could get a foothold. This is WHY quarantine is important, even if the bird is returning, even if you trust the source. She was my bird to begin with, she was on breeding loan to trusted friends who take excellent care of their birds, she was returning to my care. But shit happens and if it was something contagious, the rest of my birds would have been protected because she was quarantined.

Anyway, please keep your fingers (and toes) crossed for her, and if you'd like to help out with the bills for testing (I'm staring down over $1,000 in blood tests and vet visits and meds, and the money I had left from this year has been exhausted), it would be greatly appreciated! I've got ko-fi and PayPal currently. Also appreciate any good vibes you could send her way, she's gonna need it.
