I found a funny writeup of the first big tournament in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, which revolved around the XYZ format. Players soon found out it was faster and more efficient to lose a bunch of matches quickly instead of winning matches over a longer period of time, resulting in an entire metagame built around depleting your own Life Points as fast as possible, with key cards being Garbage Lord, Appointer of the Red Lotus, and Cybernetic Fusion Support.
Due to these shenanigans (and lesser shenanigans like opposing players working to HEAL the opponents as much as they could), later tournaments made it much more profitable to win duels AND greatly lowered the amount of duels needed to get good prizes, so it all worked out!
