The jungles of Southeast Asia not only host the usual critters like birds, bats and bugs, but some lizards have also developed gliding capabilities to fly amongst them.

Draco lizards, as they are commonly referred to, have been gifted with wide skin membranes that are supported by special ribs on either side of their body. This helps them to glide gracefully through the air.

With its scaly body and wings, the lizard has always been associated with dragons — in fact, the Latin word for dragon is ‘draco’. This close resemblance has made them seem like mythical creatures to many people.

Flying dragons are tiny reptiles, unlike their mythical counterparts. They have slender bodies and reach a length of eight inches or a little longer. The lizards have a very long tail compared to the length of the rest of their body.

In the past, experts believed that the membranes of the dracos opened on their own. However, recent research has uncovered that certain lizards use their arms to manually extend them. This groundbreaking evolutionary discovery sheds new light on these majestic creatures.

Because if you compared to other airborne reptiles such as flying geckos and snakes, lizards possess more impressive manoeuvring abilities. They are capable of controlling their movements with immense precision by using their wing membranes to steer and glide while they are in the air.

They can also move their tail, which acts like a rudder for steering. The animals have a flattened appearance while they are gliding.

Over forty species of flying lizards exist. All of them are native to Southeast Asia. I think It’s weird how uncommon these lizards are outside of southeast asia. Anyways, They are classified in the family Agamidae. Members of this family are often referred to as agamids or as agamid lizards.

What’s special about these flying dragons is that common flying dragons have a mottled appearance when their wings aren’t expanded. They just look like regular lizards without wings when they are just chilling or resting on the tree.

The combination of grey, tan, brown, black and green helps the rainforest animals to blend seamlessly with the environment. This helps them in camouflaging against the trees and is extremely effective for survival in their habitat.

Flying dragons usually spend their day flying from tree to tree, or even from branch to branch within the same tree. This behavior helps them find food, find a mate, and avoid being preyed upon.

Gliding is a common technique used by males to scare off other males when competing for dominance.

These lizards are territorial. A male patrols a territory consisting of a few trees.

He maneuvers around the trees to shield them from any hostile lizards. When the males hit ground, they tend to show off their dewlaps indicating their section of territory.

However, this enhanced visibility can put them at risk of being targeted by predators.

Arboreal snakes, birds, and monitor lizards are believed to be the primary predators of flying dragons. However, they are surprisingly successful despite the threat of these predators in their natural surroundings.

Flying dragons usually rely on ants for sustenance, but they also catch termites along with other insects to fulfill their dietary requirements.

The flying lizard has an interesting way of getting food, it often climbs up a tree trunk while eating.

However, A male very rarely — if ever — comes to the ground.

A female comes to the ground to lay her eggs, however.

Still much is unknown about the lives of flying dragons in their natural habitats, especially regarding their mating and reproduction habits.

Scientists have noted the fascinating mating display.

When looking for a mate, males of this species show off their glide wings to the female and even go so far as to bob their bodies up and down.

The female utilizes her snout to dig a nesting chamber in the ground once mating is done.

And she will place up to five eggs in a specialized den, which she’ll then carefully conceal with soil.

Sadly, after watching over the eggs for around 24 hours, female loses responsibility and allows them to continue developing without her. However, this behavior is very common in reptile world.

Egg hatching timelines can differ greatly depending on the species and other factors, making it difficult to accurately predict.

It all depends on environmental factors.

Draco lizards are truly remarkable creatures, with a captivating and unique appearance.

They make their home in the forest and are enjoyable to watch. They have adapted wonderfully to their habitat and make a fascinating sight for humans.

I am assuming, seeing a gliding lizard in the wild is a breathtaking experience, especially for those species known for their vibrant and vivid wing hues.
