In the aftermath of the Battle of the Five Armies, the elves had retreated to their home in Mirkwood as soon as they were satisfied the orcs were beaten back (if not eliminated). The two fledgling nations at the battleground, however, stood vulnerable. The men of Lake-Town found themselves homeless, forced by the dragon to rebuild their lives out of the crumbling ruins of Dale. To the north, their neighbors the dwarves had retaken the halls of Erebor, now half-destroyed themselves by the dragon's decades of residence. Neither could foot a full army to protect themselves should Gundabad threaten again. Should they turn on each other, destruction was equally assured.

So the one fully-conscious Durin wrote to the smuggler-turned-ruler of Dale, and made a proposal: join their eldest's hands in marriage, and ally with one another. As soon as possible.

i imagine they'd do "political picnics" where they sit in a bougie, decked out tent in a neutral area and discuss political matters over a hearty dinner and glasses of wine.

thranduil would show up with all his assistants, scribes, servers, bodyguards, all regal and prepared. thorin would pull up with his most trusted homies, fili (king to be), balin (scribe) and dwalin (bodyguard), and would also be very regal and prepared.
