Yk all the fics where Bilbo runs away from Erebor and has Frodo in secret, and therefore Frodo grows up without knowing much about his Dwarvish heritage and Thorin spends years not knowing he has a child?

Scratch that, reverse it.

Thorin is insecure and ashamed after his actions while gold sick. So after he's recovered he pushes Bilbo away, back to the Shire, back to his books. Once he realizes Frodo's gonna yk... be born, he's much too mortified to have someone fetch or even inform Bilbo.

And so, against the advice of the company, he raises him on his own with little access to his hobbit heritage. He grows up to be, yes still sweet and kind Frodo Baggins, but also much more rough, stubborn, and violent. Not out of hatred or evil but out of survival, lashing out like a scraggly princely runt of a litter.

Anyway, eventually someone tells Bilbo, the news of his son travels from Bilbo to Gandalf. And after his 111th birthday Gandalf figures who better to deliver the ring to mordor than the child of the hobbit who resisted it for so long. (In this universe Bilbo stays in the Shire for the 17 years Gandalf spends researching.)

But once he's returned to the Shire the question becomes: who will hold the ring on the trek to find Frodo? Well why not the gardener he just caught dropping eaves? Aka Samwise Gamgee. Also in the mean time Merry and Pippin have heard rumors about their missing mysterious dwarf cousin, and hell if Gandalf and Sam are going to meet him then they have to go too.

I don't think Sam would fare well with the ring long term but luckily the group is eventually ambushed by a pack of dwarfs on their way to the Shire. And at its head is the prince of Erebor himself on a quest to find his Hobbit father. However that mission is now gonna have to wait, replaced by the trek to mordor.

When ambushed, Frodo holds a sword to Sam's throat and Sam is horrifically smitten. Very unnecessary violent meetcute.

Frodo is lowkey an accident but a happy accident, and following the events of The Hobbit trilogy he's raised in the Shire by Bilbo. Growing up he has very little access to dwarven culture aside from small things he hears from Bilbo and inaccurate texts from hobbit authors.

As he gets older he tries to feel connected with other dwarrow but fumbles and misses key aspects of a lot of traditions. For example he learns a lot of important intricate braiding techniques and styles but completely misses the entire relationship aspect of it.

At some point with the fellowship, him and Gimli realize they're related and it's very sweet. Very "YOU'RE THORINS BOY?!" "uhh.. ya?" Followed by the world's tightest hug and such.

Anyway TIME SKIP. After Sam and Frodo wake up in Ithilien, Gimli is a little worried to see him because both him and Legolas' now have small braids to mark their relationship. Only when he walks in he's met with a Frodo *covered* in endearingly messy attempts at courtship styles all done by an unknowing Samwise. Which is then followed by Sam entering the room with his hair almost entirely tried back in what to any dwarf is a truly impressive wedding proposal.

At this point Sam and Frodo havent talked about their feelings like at all. And to them, they just got a little bored on their long journey and, needing a little comfort and familiarity, Frodo had begun braiding and teaching Sam how to braid.

But to Gimli? It looks like they're getting married like TONIGHT.
