It’s spring and we all know what that means. That’s right—the goddamned scrub jays are back.
California Smug Jerk Common Name: California Scrub Jay (formerly Western Scrub Jay)
Due to climate change, this smug son of a bitch has expanded its range from California up the western coast of the U.S. into Washington State, and is now regularly disturbing the peace in my back yard with its fucking loud, harsh call.
It used to be called the Western Scrub Jay, but some scientists got bored and decided to divide them into two separate species (California Scrub Jays in coastal areas, and Woodhouse’s Scrub Jays in the interior). Both are still smug fucks.
Bird Region: North America. West Coast. Definitely in the author’s trees.

Read all about this and other asshats from around the world in my latest book:

Makuleke has it all. Located in the very North-East corner of South-Africa, bordering Zimbabwe and Mozambique, it is part of Kruger NP.
The diversity of landscapes is astounding: Such different areas so close you can combine them into a single walk: Great floodplains, fever tree forests, a jackelberry forest, 2 different rivers, and a wealth of koppis full of ancient Baobab trees.
This is consequently matched by the wildlife diversity: Makuleke has 75% of all the species found in Kruger NP. South-African birders come to find the guys they would normally have to travel to East-Africa for.
The Makuleke people are the Shangaan, a Tsonga tribe that were the first to legally claim back the title to their land from the government, after they had been violently evicted when the Apartheid regime founded Kruger park. They have chosen to maintain it as a wilderness area for eco-tourism participating in the resulting economic opportunities.

Are you on Fieldguide? Because I am! I’ve just started using the app after having it forever to see what others are taking photos of!
Basically, it’s this huge community of people who find, photograph and contribute to a database of bugs (and I think birds and other things, I’m really only just learning how big this thing is) around the world! It’s very user friendly and makes contributing easy so everyone can get into it!
You can follow me there and I’ll follow you back so I can check out what critters you’re finding!

So I finally started #reading the work of @jeff_vandermeer123 recently for the @futurefossilspodcast #bookclub and wow...as someone who grew up in #florida, has had a lifelong love affair with #biodiversity, got my start as a #scientificillustrator and #biologist, and has sent the last 11 years painting a #fieldguide to #weird imaginary life-forms like the ones RAMPANT in his books, I can't express how much encountering his #biopunk #postapocalyptic #scifi novel BORNE has been a "Where have you been all my life" moment...truly #uncanny, like meeting yourself in a lighthouse somewhere. Thank you Jeff for your writing! I'm so excited to keep going into #strangebird & #deadastronauts, and to discuss these books with my #podcast audience. ✨ (at Santa Fe, New Mecico) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8FCdJsJrJ-/?igshid=jxlx9xbkdwd
